Greenfield is a town in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 1,642 at the 2010 census. It is part of the metropolitan area of Indianapolis and is located near the Ohio River. The first European to travel through what is now Greenfield was Captain John Smith in 1692 on his journey from Kentucky to find new lands for England's Crown. Heading westward along the Ohio River, he came across a tract of land that he named New France because it looked like paradise after spending time there on horseback during his explorations. In 1814, General James Hays discovered gold near Greenfield while exploring for a new route to California under United States control following Mexico's independence from Spain. The discovery led to an influx of settlers as prospectors began striking gold along the riverbanks and in nearby towns such as Bloomington, Hammondsport and Terre Haute. The railroads arrived soon after and brought with them more people and businesses which began developing around downtown Greenfield into a booming community full of shops, theaters, schools and churches. By 1860, Greenfield had reached its peak with over 2,000 residents including 300 farmers who grew crops on their farms or raised livestock in six large barns used today by local residents for storage purposes only; these buildings are still standing today! During this time period also saw heavy development in real estate; especially around downtown where many homes were constructed using Federal dollars awarded to Indiana for building projects That met certain specifications such as being bomb-proof or having underground utilities accessible without entering through ground floors! During World War II, although not directly related to Greenfield but nonetheless touched all aspects of life here locally both civilly and militarily due to its proximity to munitions plants operated by DuPont Corporation; some 8 miles away! All citizens regardless Of service were subject To rationing so that everyone could benefit from wartime production while keeping intact their everyday lives! With no end in sight until 1945 when Japan surrendered complete victory was within reach however events intervened called Operation Overlord resulting In Hiroshima particularly affecting those living nearest factories…the duality between civilian & military life took on even greater proportions here at home! Today we continue our conversations about history daily throughout our school lunch periods as well as other public forums throughout our community….alluding back To those early days when everything seemed possible…..greenfields future looks bright indeed!

Greenfield is a small town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 1,913 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Decatur, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Greenfield was James Hettinger who arrived in 1814. He and his family were followed by others over the next few years until only two families remained in Greenfield after 1821 when it became part of Bartholomew County. In 1827, Greenfield was platted as a village and named for Colonel George Greenwood, an American Revolutionary War hero. The original courthouse and jail were built there in 1830-31. The community grew rapidly during the early 19th century due to its location on the proposed route of a new railroad that would reach Indianapolis from east to west. After construction began on the railroad line in 1836, many businesses moved to Greenfield because of its strategic position on both sides of the tracks. By 1840, Greenfield had a flour mill, sawmill, grist mill and four churches; three Congregational and one Methodist. In 1860, when Union General John Custer fought his last battle at Coldwater Creek outside present-day Lafayetteville Junction (now Read Township), he restocked his supplies at what is now called "Custer's Mill" just south of towncenter about nine miles from where he fought according to legend near today's intersection of State Road 507/Upper Arlington Road and Ulysses S Grant Boulevard (now Menard Avenue). Many soldiers who participated in this engagement are buried nearby at Fort Harrison Cemetery within easy walking distance of their homes or other military sites throughout central Indiana today including Camp Grant National Monument located adjacent to I-465 exit 26 on I-465 northbound lanes approximately 10 miles northeast of downtown Indianapolis which offers excellent views into Coldwater Creek Battlefield via self parking lot adjacent to visitor center open daily 9am - 4pm except Mondays when park hours are 9am - 3pm;Fort Harrison Museum located adjacent west side roadway off I-465 exit 26 just north of entrance rampExit #26 onto I-465 gosouth 8 miles then turnleft onto US 2nd Street(at today's intersection with State Road 480)and drive 8 miles east to main road also known as US 2ND street enter from south sideI-465 EAST OF DOWNTOWN INDIANAPOLIS
