Greenfield is a town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville–Fayetteville, IN-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. A post office called Greenfield was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it closed in 1905. The first settler in Greenfield was John Pritchard. Greenfield has been named for Peter Greenfeldt who purchased land along the Wabash River from the French in 1785. A grist mill on the river served as the nucleus of what became Greenfield Village during its early years. In 1854 a sawmill and grist house were built on State Road 5 west of present day downtown Greenfield; this village later merged with Evansville to form what is now Evansville. In 1881, George Hargrave opened a general store adjacent to his farmstead on West Old National Road which became known as Hargrave's Store & Grain Hill since it housed all grades of food grains including flour, feed, cornmeal and beans etc.. When college students began moving into Evansville after World War II they brought their families with them and soon many stores had either closed or converted to large apartment buildings that dominate most neighborhoods today – Hargrave's being one notable exception which still operates as an old store with its own parking lot behind it on Government Street near East High School. The townspeople erected a schoolhouse on North Main Street in 1892 but due to lack of finances it failed within year; however when a new school district was formed by consolidation of several smaller townships around Indianapolis one vote later (despite protestations from some) Greenfield voters approved bond issues for another $1 million adding themselves to that district’s membership creating “the biggest school district ever created” according to historian Tom Osborne although at that time there were only about twelve schools within that area alone making such an addition impossible without special legislation passed by Congress enabling statehood for Indiana which finally happened two years later giving rise to Marion County et al.. The original high school building located off US-219 north of town burned down in 1951 while under construction but was replaced by what is now Third Avenue Elementary School which continues functioning today despite having been razed twice during the past few decades due primarily to concerns over asbestos exposure! The current high school building (now Allen Wagoner Middle School) opened its doors September 6th 2006 after being campaign funded by local citizens including then Superintendent Drue Bigham who chaired the fundraising drive himself! With more than 2200 students inside both main classrooms as well as three gymnasiums/ multipurpose halls totaling almost 4000 sqft on four floors this facility has become perhaps one of largest public education institutions west of Interstate 70! In recent years numerous other businesses have made their mark such as Burger King (replacing defunct KFC), Ford dealership ( markedly changing green field into an upmarket shopping center), JCPenney (opened next door from Sears before moving across town), various type bars & restaurants like Subway (opened inside Dunkin' Donuts before moving out into their own restaurant space across from Third Avenue Elementary School), Applebee's (opened insideigmatic Pizza Hut before expanding into their current location next door). Many residents have also founded community organizations such as Habitat For Humanity or Muscular Dystrophy Association so there are no limits to what kind of businesses can be found right outside your door!
