Greenfield is a small town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. Greenfield was founded in 1824 and became a city in 1926. Greenfield is named after Captain John Greenfeldt, who explored this area in 1824 on behalf of the United States government. The first settler in what would become Greenfield was Isaac Beall, who arrived in 1825. Beall's home still stands and is used for storage today; it has been renovated as a museum. In 1830, John Ladd moved to Greenfield from nearby Marietta and started a tannery which continues to be run today as Ladd Tanning Co., Inc.. The town developed rapidly due to its location and good soil quality for farming; during the 1920s it became one of the largest agricultural towns in Indiana. By 1930, the population had reached 2,000 people and by 1950 it had reached 4,000 people. At that point growth slowed slightly due to competition from surrounding municipalities; however, by 1970 the population had increased to 7,500 people thanks to waves of new arrivals following military service during World War II. The primary industry remaining in Greenfield throughout its history has been agriculture; since 1860 there have been more than 100 businesses operating within the town limits alone! One such business still active today is Ladd Tanning Co., Incorporated (est: $5 million). Greenfield is a city in and the county seat of Greenfield Township, in Johnson County, Indiana. The population was 12,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis–Coshocton, IN-MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Greenfield was James DeCaro who arrived on April 6, 1814. He named his village after himself and his father Giovanni DeCaro. DeCaro's heirs Indian Agent John Fenton built a log cabin there on December 3, 1824. In 1827 A&P grocery store opened in Greenfield with $1 worth of goods. This early success led to other stores opening soon afterwards including J C Fields & Co (1829), Wm Hays Clothing Store (1830), George Armstrong Cigar Works (1831), Aaron Burr & Sons Bank (1832), J P Brady Shoes (1833), Osyth Hardware Store (1834) and Gossage Grain Elevator (May 4, 1840). By 1840 more than 20 businesses were operating in town and by 1860 over 50 had established themselves here. On July 1, 1861 the town of Greenfield became an unincorporated community when it merged with neighboring North Side to form one large town under the governance of the respective villages' trustees. On January 1, 1889 Greenfield incorporated as a city within Johnson County following passage of an act by the Indiana General Assembly creating new cities within Johnson County without first taking into consideration adjacent towns which had since amalgamated into larger communities such as South Bend or Terre Haute. Greenfield's growth continued apace during its years as a city; by 1900 it boasted over 120 businesses and had become home to some 25% of all manufacturing jobs in Indianapolis Metro area! The City's rapid expansion came to a halt during World War II when production stopped at many factories due to wartime shortages but resumed post-war thanks to government largesse such as a $25 million loan from Phillips Loan Corporation which helped spur postwar job growth across metropolitan Indy! Today Greenfeld still boasts high-quality manufacturing jobs while also becoming an attractive community full of cultural events and restaurants - making it one Of America's most vibrant downtowns!
