Greenfield had a population of about 20 people in 1818 and only 4 people in 1830 when it became a town. The original courthouse was built near the present day police station and post office in 1830. A new courthouse was built by J.H. Hinkle in 1863-64 and destroyed by fire on December 1, 1865; this building served as the first municipal hall until 1889 when it burned down again also due to arson. The first school teacher taught students grades one through six at home with help from Mrs Woods until Indianola School opened up on October 6th, 1831 which became the primary school for all students in early 1840s when Mr Hinkle donated land for their use (it still stands today). In 1861 two steamboats were brought into service to run between Evansville and Decatur; one ran every other day while the other stopped at Greenfield (this service continued until 1903). The water main break that caused much damage to property occurred on November 5th 1888 while this boat was running between Decatur and Evansville;arents went out onto the river causing extensive flooding that damaged many homes including those of George Stephenson who later founded Indianapolis (). Greenfield's first store opened its doors on July 10th, 1892 with Mrs Post openning up her house next door(). That same year Edward Crouch bought 3 acres of land just east of downtown for $5 per acre making Greenfield an incorporated town(). On January 8th 1896 Mrs Reardon gave birth to her daughter Emma within three hours after delivering via cesarean section at Oneonta Hospital located about 12 miles west of Greenfield Town Hall (.EMILY RENO) After Emma’s birth Mrs Reardon organized a Alma Maternity Home where she stayed until her death six years later.(LARRY REARDON) In 1914 during World War I there were over 100 businesses within 500 feetof each other along Main Street(just north of current day US 61) but due to heavy bombing raids no business could open because either civilians or military personnel were needed outside city limits..On February 17TH 1919 Steamboat "Cascade" made history when she traveled downriver from Hammondsburg Ferry Terminal(now known as White River Landing)to becomethe first commercial vessel operated by Evansville Water Supply Company..In 1951 large portionsof downtown were razed following an industrial accident which left 14 families homeless(several others have since rebuilt their homes). Today most aspects associated with typical American life such as shopping malls, restaurants etc., can be found just outside of town limits providing easy access for residents without leaving their comfortable neighborhoods! Despite some negative effects (such as loss of valuable farmland), towns like Evansville continue to grow despite challenges throughout their growth process while struggling less than larger cities do.;-)

The first people to live in Greenfield were the Potawatomi and Sauk Indians who lived along the banks of the White River. They were followed by other tribes such as the Menominee and Winnebago who settled in what is now Greenfield Township in 1802. A post office called Greenfield was established in 1806, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1906. A sawmill on White River Road started operation in 1851, and became one of the largest mills east of Chicago. The mill closed its doors for good in 1965. In 1868, Wm Halsey constructed a frame house on what is now Main Street which he named "Halsey's Cabin". He later moved to this house which he used as his residence until his death in 1916. Mrs. Halsey continued to live here until her death also in 1916. Mr . Halsey had been an early settler hereabouts and built some of the earliest homes around Greenfield township

Greenfield was one of the original towns in Clark County, Indiana. It was founded by Isaac Green in 1812. The first post office at Greenfield was established on July 4, 1815. In 1830, Greenfield became a part of Terre Haute Township. From its establishment until 1865, it had a population of about 350 people. In 1865, Greenfield became a part of Evansville Township and has been there ever since.
