The first European settlers in Greenfield were Frenchmen who arrived in 1788 and named their settlement "Haute-Vallée". In 1810, General AndrewJackson's army destroyed Fort Dearborn and drove out the French colonists, replacing them with Americans In 1813, Greenfield became a county seat of Vigo County when that county was created from part of Posey County. The original courthouse building burned down in 1860 and was replaced by a new building which still stands today. The old courthouse had three floors and served as an important court center for many years before it also caught on fire. In 1867, Greenfield incorporated as a city under the name of "New Hope". New Hope was renamed to "Greenfield" after its incorporation date in order to reflect its agricultural focus rather than its military or commercial history. The city's growth continued until World War II when it shrunk due to lack of industry and population growth within perimeter limits set by state law; however, since then Greenfield has experienced significant resurgence through both retail development (through Mid America Mall) as well as residential housing developments such as Shoppers mall across the river from downtown which provides easy access to job opportunities throughout central Indiana. The current mayor is Darrell Youngblood who was elected on November 3rd 2018 following a run off election against incumbent Mayor Tom Sadowski
