In 1857, Daniel Boone built the first Ranger rifle in Greenfield using rifles that he had taken from the Shawnee Indians. The rifle was simple but effective, and its design spread quickly across America. It became known as the " boomerang" because it could be used to shoot short distances with deadly accuracy. In 1858, General Harrison Gray Otis began construction on Fort Dearborn in what is today Chicago. The fort was an important strategic location on the north side of Lake Michigan and its cannons helped protect the city during times of war or crisis. In order to provide cover for troops at Fort Dearborn, artillerymen set up gun sights on hills around town so they could hit targets more accurately than if they had to use their eyesight alone. This early firearms sight system was called "otter's eye." In 1859, General Morton Palmer constructed a battery of guns at Cairo Station near present-day Greenfield village (the site of which is still occupied by some buildings). This battery became one of the most important military installations in Illinois during the American Civil War. Because it sat so close to enemy lines, Cairo Station served as a valuable training ground for Confederate soldiers. In 1865, Greenfield became part of Indiana after the state was created from parts of Illinois and Ohio. Greenfield is a city in and the county seat of Henry County, Indiana, United States. The population was 12,724 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Greenfield is located on the southern bank of the White River, east of Indianapolis. The white river is a tributary of the larger Notre Dame River. The first settler in what became Greenfield was John Ford who built a log cabin in 1817 on land he had acquired from David Broussard for $100. A post office called "Ford" was established in 1821, but closed in 1830 because it was too far away from Greenfield's trading post on the White River. In 1833, James Cushing started an agricultural settlement northeast of Greenfield and named it Cushman after himself and his father-in-law Elijah Couchman (1793–1862). By 1840, there were over 150 houses and businesses in CUSHMAN Township with a population of 2,500 people. In 1861, when Henry County was organized, Greenfield became its county seat. The first courthouse was completed in 1865 and served until 1971 when it burned down during an economic depression that struck the area hard. A new courthouse opened in 1972 and still serves as the local government's primary courthouse today. On November 3rd, 2007 voters passed a referendum to become Mayor Pro Tem for District 5 which includes parts of downtown Indianapolis including Applebees restaurant & Starbucks Coffee Company On January 1st 2009 John Wirth assumed mayoral duties effective February 1st following City Council approval Greenfields growth has been driven by its proximity to Interstate 65/I-465 corridor as well as outer ring zones I-65/I-465 Business Corridor Extension (BXE) extending all around town north to south including Parma Road which bordered Howard University campus before I-465 rerouted through town center making this corridor one stoplight away from almost every suburban home within minutes' driving distance
