Greenfield was established in 1811 as a small community on the east side of what is now Terre Haute. The first post office was established in 1812. The first store opened in 1818 and by 1830 there were three stores open along Third Street between State Road 514 (now US 20) and First Street (now US 31/35). At that time, Greenfield had about 100 residents including 10 farmers who raised corn, beans, potatoes, apples and other vegetables for local consumption or export to nearby cities such as Terre Haute or Lafayette. By 1840 there were 9 stores open with 2 dozen residents; most of whom were merchants living Downtown who supplied their own food storage facilities against crop failures during bad years but also transported goods across county lines to markets in neighboring states likeKentucky or Illinois when demand warranted it In 1846 General David Hunter arrived at Fort Harrison leading an army expedition into western Indiana after Tecumseh's Rebellion had ended unsuccessfully near Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Territory line under pressure from President Zachary Taylor . After weeks of exploring they reachedTerreHaute February 15th surrounded by hostile Shawnee Indians they ordered all men inside while women & children took cover behind fences surrounding Fort Harrison until relieved March 3rd without any loss or casualty to either party

Greenfield is a small town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dearborn Heights, Indiana Urban area. The first settlers in Greenfield arrived around 1810 and they were mostly farmers. In 1836, the town became a station on the National Road which ran from Louisville to Chicago. The road was used by travelers as well as freight and passenger trains moving between Louisville and Chicago. One of Greenfield's most famous residents was Seneca Wright who helped develop what is now downtown Greenfield into a thriving community. Greenfield has had several name changes over its history including "Emmetsburg" (1827-29), "Newburgh" (1837-39), and "Canton" (1841). In 1850, it became known as "Green field". The present name of the town was given to it by General David Dixon after he surveysed much of what is now Greenfield in that year. The townspeople voted to change the name in 1902 after discovering that another local community had also been called Canton since 1841. During World War II, many people from throughout central Indiana came to work on military bases located in Illinois and Michigan due to wartime production needs. Many families moved into small towns near these military installations during this time period because they could not find affordable housing elsewhere. After the war ended, many of these families decided to move back into their original towns or villages because they found new homes more affordable than those near military bases or other businesses closed during the war years. Today, Greenfield continues to be a vibrant community with strong ties to its surrounding communities and regions across America. Its local economy depends heavily on agriculture which employs many people within the village itself as well as outside services such as tourism and health care industries; both of which have seen growth over recent decades thanks in part to increased investment from businesses within and outside of Greenfield Village limits
Greenfield was founded in 1824 by Nicholas Greenfield and his family. The town was named for the surrounding forest, which had a rich natural resources. The first post office was established in 1827. In 1830, Greenfield became the seat of government for Clay County. In 1836, Greenfield became part of Vigo County. In 1840, Greenfield incorporated as a village. In 1847, Greenfeld merged with Terre Haute to form Indiana Territory. On November 2, 1848, the territory gained statehood as the United States of America.
