The settlement began as a small farmstead on the banks of the Wabash River in 1814 by Nicholas Green and his wife Rebecca. In 1827, John Green founded what became known as Greenfield Township. The township was organized in 1836 and named for Nicholas Green's father-in-law, Elijah Granger. By 1840, the township had grown to include parts of present-day Hampshire and Westmoreland counties. The first school in Greenfield Township was built in 1837 and operated until 1865. In 1861, it merged with Westmoreland Township to form Evansville Township. Greenfield is located at (40.533333,-86.6750002). According to the 2010 census, its population was 1,812; however this number may have shrunk due to recent growth within Evansville metropolitan area

In 1814, Greenfield became part of the Northwest Territory under US President James K. Polk. In 1818, Greenfield's first post office opened with five mailbags as its only subscribers. The town developed slowly because there were no roads or railroads in that area at that time. It did not become a big commercial center until after the Civil War when cotton traders started to arrive in town and brought with them their own markets and transportation needs. By 1870, Greenfield had a population of 250 residents and it grew rapidly thanks to its location, commerce and agricultural production. During World War I, many military officers living near Indianapolis decided to move to Greenfield so they could avoid combatant taxes while they served our country overseas. Many homes were built here during this time as soldiers engaged in training camps and other wartime activities; however most of these structures have since been demolished or repurposed into other uses such as hotels or RV parks by current owners/occupants
The first settlement in Greenfield, Indiana was made by James White and his family in 1812. The town was named after Greenfield, Massachusetts. The first post office in Greenfeldt County was established on December 1, 1813. In 1831, the county seat of Greenfeldt County was moved to New Albany.
