Greenfield is an incorporated town in Hamilton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Indianapolis. The original site of Greenfield was a small community near Clearwater Creek. In 1827, as part of the platting of Indianapolis, Greenfield became one of four towns included in the new city. The others were Fort Wayne (1827), Warsaw (1828), and Noblesville (1829). In 1859, when Indianapolis became a state government entity, Greenfield became one of its five civil divisions. Under state law at that time, all municipalities must adopt a municipal charter setting forth their functions and powers. According to one account, this charter provided for "the common police and defense [of] the township;" also providing for "a schoolmaster to be appointed by the board;" "an fire brigade composed of six members each"; and "a assessor to collect taxes." On March 15, 1861 – two weeks after Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House – Greenfield's first municipal meeting took place with Wm Ransom as mayor and twelve other residents Present including David Sheppard who served as clerk from 1860-61 until his death in 1865. That same year saw another significant event when John Cameron purchased 8 acres east of town from Jno Mapes for $5 per acre which he donated to make land available for schools and churches in 1863/64 but never used due to difficulties getting local farmers to donate their land during those years! On July 4th 1870 Pershing Drive was named in honor of General Ulysses S. Grant's visit to town while on his way westward from Uniontown towards Greenwood! In 1892 James Fenton organized a group called "The National Guard Association", later renamed "Indiana National Guard Association". This organization helped support Hoosiers during the American Civil War by supplying arms and clothing to various units fighting on both sides - something that would not have been possible without prior coordination between various factions within our fledgling state government! During World War I there was an increase in activity as many soldiers found themselves interned at Hammondsport Naval Base then later incarcerated at Leavenworth Penitentiary before finally being released back into society upon war’s end... only problem was most arrived too late or too sickly or young so they didn’t really old enough or strong enough physically or mentally volunteered for military service... oh well they still got what they wanted couldn’t they? After World War II ended things calmed down somewhat with some large corporations moving into town while smaller businesses closed up shop over competition from larger stores opening up within walking distance. A few notable businesses that remain today include: PNC Bank (now Wells Fargo), Speedway Motorsports Park (now Lucas Oil Raceway) & Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. In recent years there has been an increase in crime Rate mainly due to people coming out OF STATE TO JOIN THE MILITARY etc... however with stoneware coffee cups now ubiquitous throughout town defenders are present just like mom used to do :)
Greenfield is a city in and the county seat of Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,021 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the state of Indiana and is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Greenfield was Nicholas Neeley in 1812. The town was platted in 1824 by John Fenton and named for Greenfield Township, Illinois where his father had been born. In 1831 Greenfield became an independent municipality. On March 4, 1859, it incorporated as a city under the name of "Greenfield." The current incarnation as a city began with its incorporation on December 31, 1966. In 1870s and 1880s there were many small businesses operating out of various homes throughout Greenfield; however most all these closed down during prohibition because it would not have been possible to sell liquor without government approval which could only come from local churches or other religious organizations. However there are some notable exceptions such as A&P grocery store which still operates today ( founders Daniel & Anna Patterson) and Harry’s barbershop which operated until 1984 when Harry’s son David took over operations (David Hines). The early 20th century saw heavy industry coming to Greenfield but this also led to several large disasters such as a fire that destroyed much of downtown in 1922 and another fire that destroyed most of Quaker Heights in 1925 both caused by faulty wiring inside factories owned by Jardine Matheson Company who lost control over their plants after prohibition ended. This made Green Field one ofIndiana's few places where industrialyson did not lead to widespread destruction like neighboring cities like Terre Haute or Noblesville although parts including commercial areas around I-465 remain highly damaged from past industrial accidents etc.). During World War II many industries moved away but many new businesses came online including Broadway Furniture Factory which produced radios for the military and Storch Paper company which manufactured paper products for local restaurants started up just south of downtown near Interstate 465/Upper Arlington Road after being displaced by Ford Motor Company's Willow Run Arsenal facility just north Of town on I-465 across from Northwest State University (now Purdue University). These companies would continue to operate into the 1990s even though production shifted more towards service than manufacturing since refrigeration technology had advanced greatly by then rendering many foods obsolete without any need for them whatsoever outsideOf armies etc.. After WWII most manufacturing stopped except along I-465 where Knolls Tire factory continued making rubber tires until it shuttered in 1997 following years of poor performance due mainly to dwindling demand from automobiles post prohibition while other manufactures left too leaving Downtown GreensFIELD largely empty apart from two high school classes who historical marker now tells about this period
