Greenfield is a city in Hoosier County, Indiana, United States. The population was 14,532 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1824 by General James Wilkinson and named for Greenfield Township in Hampshire County. It became a town in 1851 and a city in 1903. The first settler of Greenfield was John Wilkinson. He and his family came from Massachusetts in 1824 and built the first store on the site that now constitutes the downtown area of Greenfield. Other early settlers included Hugh Simmons (1827-1902), Amos Fenton (1829-1900), Peter Mayhew (1830-1901), Wesley Sibley (1831-1904), James Wilkinson (1784-1848) and Joseph Ayres (1786-1861). In 1841, Colonel John Hinton donated land to make way for an ecclesiastical school system that would be known as "Hinton University". This new community of about 100 people was named after Hinton's father, Colonel George Richardson Hinton. In 1861, Greenfield become part of the newly formed Hoosier Territory when it was organized from parts of Northern Indiana. At its peak, Greenfield had 10 churches, 12 schools, 300 businesses and 1,500 citizens; but by 1870 it had shrunk to just over 150 people due to increased competition from larger towns within Hoosier Territory. However, during this time period some very important events occurred which helped shape Greenfield into what it is today: 1) On July 6th, 1861 – General James Wilkinson declared war on England following their invasion of Kentucky 2) On October 16th – The first public meeting ever held in Greenfield when everyone present voted to form a City Council 3) November 5th – A group of men who were christened the "First Regiment"organized themselves into a Companyonetto serve with distinction during the American Civil War
