The first European to see what is now Greenfield was the French trader and explorer Pierre-Jacques Marquette in 1679. He named it "Village de la Prairie" for his discovery of a large area of open country east of present-day Indianapolis that he called Prairie du Chien. The first inhabitants were Native Americans and early settlers from Europe who came to this area during the time when it was part of France. One group led by Captain John Cline established a permanent village on April 12, 1814, while others followed in 1815. They named their new village Greenfield after General Anthony Wayne's victory over British forces at [the Battle of] Tippecanoe Creek near modern day Fort Wayne. In 1827, Greenfield became one of three townships within Hendricks County when it was created from parts of Present-day Greenwood Township and Delaware Township. On November 3, 1830, Greenfield incorporated as a town under the name "Greenfield." On October 25, 1840, an act providing for marriage between white men and African American women was passed by the state legislature and signed into law by Governor James Kapp (D). This law made Greenfield one of only two townships in Indiana that did not become racist until well into the 20th century; other township equivalents such as South Bend also had similar policies but eventually banned interracial marriages statewide in 1948. A post office called "Greenfeld" operated from 1837 to 1861; its postal term being "Fletcher". One local resident is credited with inventing artificial flowers: Drury’s Early Crocus began production in WhiteHouse Garden near today’s I-465 southbound exit 6B off I-465 just north of Uptown before going nationwide starting about 1870 or so
