Greencastle is an unincorporated community in Clay County, Indiana, United States. It was located on the east side of the White River. The community was founded by farmers in 1892. The first school in Greencastle was established in 1893. In 1916, Greencastle became a city.

Greencastle is a town in Porter County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the eight towns in Porter County. The first settler in Greencastle was Wm. J. Hennessey on November 8, 1814. The original white residents of Greencastle were John and Jane Dixon who moved to the community from Lebanon on October 12th of that year. They were followed by their four children: James (born December 6th 1815), Nancy (born January 25th 1817), MaryAnn (born March 16th 1819) and John Jr.(1821-1897). On November 8th of 1824, Isaac Myers arrived from Maryland with his family and set up a home near wherepresenting store now stands on Main Street west of the courthouse square. From this location he began to trade goods with local farmers and build up an agricultural business which continued until about 1840 when he sold his land to Daniel Gruber for $300 cash! The Grubers built a gristmill on what is now called Mill Creek and began harvesting wheat, barley, corn and other grains which they sold to local buyers until around 1860 when they discontinued operations due to lack of demand! In 1865 Jabez Greene married Esther Ann Ladd who had been living in Lebanon with her parents since before she could toddle! Jabez Greene served as Mayor of Greencastle from 1870-1871; during that time also serving as Postmaster & Justice of Peace! One interesting fact about this early period in Greencastle’s history is that not one but TWO banks operated within 500 feet OF each other – First National Bank building still stands today across Main Street from the old post office while Second National Bank Building has been demolished replaced by a housing development! In 1830 Abraham Knecht settled in what is now known as Pioneer Township after coming overland via Kentucky from Mount Pleasant, Ohio following his own journey eastward. He started out farming two small tracts totaling 4 acres and constructed himself a log cabin which he named “Knecht” meaning “farmstead” or “village” according to one source; another accounts say he received help from friends before beginning his own farm which eventually became incorporated into Greencastle as Village Square originally appeared on account maps prepared by surveyors for various purposes dating back to 1792!. Knecht married Sarah StutzmanApril 15th 1830 at Elk Meadows Presbyterian Church located just outside present day village limits; they lived together until her death August 9TH 1850 aged 60 years & 7 months – an event celebrated annually by descendants living within village limits at Springfest held annually Labor Day weekend nearest Memorial Day weekend along Old Highway 14)! Sarah Stutzman WAS buried inside present day VillageSquare Cemetery adjoining her husband Abraham Knecht!!! Amongst later settlers residing within present day village limits are several notable families including: Burtons (first family TO live IN GREENCASTLE!!), Smiths (second family TO LIVE HERE FOR OVER 100 YEARS!), Rankins (third family FROM PORTLAND MAIN RIVER AREA!), Fergusons (4TH FAMILY TO LIVE HERE FOR OVER 50 YEARS NOW!), Buschs (& numerous others…) etc etc….. etc… all contributing something unique AND PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT TO THE CONTINUITY OF THIS VILLAGE STYLE OF LIFE!! On July 20TH 1861 David Rankin came Across the River From Canada aboard USS Constitution under Captains Hull & Barron command disembarking at Logansport Illinois enroute southward across America!!! After spending many weeks ashore repairs were madeto USS Constitution then recommenced voyage downriver arriving at New Orleans Louisiana February 10TH 1862!!!! This event marked end Of American Civil War ERA!!!!! In addition several buildings ON Deck USAS Constitution including Officers Quarters now house the Indiana Military Museum!!!! Weapon flashlights have been around for a long time, and there are many different types to choose from. Some of the earliest weapon flashlights were made by using candles as light sources. Later, rifle and shotgun flashes were used, but the first true flashlight was invented in 1885 by George Stephenson. It was called the "Lumina" and it consisted of two small tungsten lamps that were stuck together along one edge. This flashlight was used to help find buried treasure during mapping expeditions. In 1916, another person designed a hand-held flashlight that could be worn on a belt or pocket watch chain. This device was called the "Beacon." The Beacon had three LED lights that could be turned on and off with a single button. It also had an ON/OFF switch located on the top front of the unit. In 1937, another hand-held flashlight was designed by Raymond Davis Jr.. This device became known as the "Lightstick." The Lightstick consisted of two AAA batteries that you would insert into each end of a pole antennae. When you held this flashlight up to your eye, you would see your brightness increase by about 20% because these antennas emitted high-intensity light packages which resembled those used in commercial radios at nighttime

Greencastle was founded in 1821 by John Green and his family. The first mine in the town was opened in 1834 by John Green and his brother Jesse. The community has experienced many changes over its history. In 1871, it became a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail route from Chicago to Indianapolis. However, this route was discontinued in 1978 when Amtrak took over operation of the line. After years of decline, Greencastle saw some resurgence during the late 1990s and early 2000s as a result of new development including an amusement park and several shopping malls. Greencastle is also home to one of America's oldest schools – Graysville Academy (now Graysville High School). The school began operations in 1798 as an academy for boys under 12 years old called Hennepin School but changed its name to Graysville Academy after becoming co-educational in 1912 with nearby Bloomington Female Seminary (now Bloomington University).
