Greencastle, Indiana is a town in Owen County, Indiana, United States. The population was 3,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis–Marion metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Greencastle was Nathan Stephenson in 1814. He and his family were among the first to come up from Kentucky. The town was platted on February 5, 1827 by John Fenton with a land grant from President James Ketchum. In 1830, Greencastle became the county seat of Owen County and remained so until 1907 when it was moved to Marionville. The original courthouse and jail were built on what is now First Street. The present courthouse was completed in 1906 and replaced an earlier building that had been destroyed by a fire in 1892. Greencastle has two schools: South High School which serves students from grades 9-12, and White Hall Elementary which serves students from kindergarten through 6th grade. There are also two churches: First Baptist Church (founded in 1840) and Evangelistic Methodist Church (founded in 1870). As one proceeds north towards Fort Wayne it becomes less populated with more farmland providing few services other than farming although there are a few manufacturing plants scattered throughout this area like Alamo Indoor Pool & Fitness Center producing water heaters for heating homes or golf carts for children's amusement park rides etc.; home builders such as Pella Homes LLCand others are beginning to take hold but many remain smaller operations limited to one or two buildings with no plans to expand beyond that due lack of opportunity or interest outside of areas like Fort Wayne

They named their settlement after General George Armstrong Custer who had died in a skirmish near Fort Dearborn two years earlier. In 1827, Greencastle became an official town under the name "Newburgh." Newburgh was renamed Greencastle in 1868 when it became part of the new county of Hendricks. The first post office was established in Greencastle on March 12, 1867. Greencastle's economy has been based primarily on agriculture since its founding and ranching has continued to be an important aspect of its economy until recent times. Today, there are several small businesses located in town as well as two hospitals and three schools which provide primary education for students between kindergarten and 12th grade along with many other businesses that support local government services including public works and plumbing services The community also contains one shopping center that provides general store, gas station/convenience store, movie theater/theater complex (with multiplexes across multiple formats), several restaurants/cafes/bars, library system with over 350 books and periodical subscriptions as well as numerous greenhouses for produce production The community also contains a number of large tract homes dating back to around 1920s-30s which have been converted into apartments or home rentals In addition to its agricultural roots, Greencastle also experienced significant growth due to waves of immigrants during World War II: Poles brought over during World War I; Italians during World War II; Germans following the end of World War II; Irish after they were allowed entry into the United States Today some aspects that continue to draw residents to Greencastle include its excellent public schools (Grades K-12), proximity to Downtown Indy (10 minutes by car or 15 minutes by bus), riverfront views from many homes throughout town including Overbrook Estates where President Abraham Lincoln lived while he served as Governor from 1861-1865 – which offers access to hiking trails leading downriver – mixed use development anchored by churches/synagogues within walking distance called Trinity Episcopal Church Village Center – completed in 2009 containing nearly 1000 housing units all designed together with common amenities such as garages and kitchens shared among tenants - numerous art galleries presence throughouttown including Oneonta Fine Arts District - nightlife options available through various clubs nestled amongst popular neighborhoods like Overbrook Estates offering late night dining experiences outside venues etc., etc
