On July 5, 1892, an American rifle company was organized in Greencastle, Indiana. The company’s first president and founder was Hiram Maxim. It was also the first time that a rifle company had been organized in the town. At the time of its formation, the .45-caliber Winchester rifle was still new and novel to America. The club continued to meet until 1902 when it merged with another Rifle Club in neighboring Whiting. In 1907, a new clubhouse and range were built in Greencastle by H.A. Schofield & Sons hardware store proprietors as part of their enlarged business park on Main Street East near US-24/State Road 52).
Greencastle is a small town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Greencastle were the Potawatomi Indians. There are still some Indian reservations in and around Greencastle, as well as several cemeteries that serve the tribe's members. In 1824, General William Henry Harrison made an attack on Fort Dearborn and destroyed most of the village and surrounding crops; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of Greencastle's growth as a center for trade and commerce. In 1830, John Wesley founded Methodism here after spending time preaching from his home near Elkhart Lake in nearby Elkhart County. Methodism quickly became one of Greencastle's major attractions due to its strong Sunday services and large number of converts. Methodist missionaries soon started building churches throughout the area, starting with Trinity Chapel on Main Street in 1835. In 1847-48, when Lawrence Murtaugh built a mill on White River just north of town, he published a pamphlet called "A Plan forthe Improvement ofthe Township of Terre Haute" which proposed various plans for improving local infrastructure such asroadsidesandwatercourses.– This document helped spur investment into Greensville County by locals who saw potential benefits to their community development schemes (e.g., irrigation systems) not yet realized or even contemplated by those living elsewhere in the county! In 1865-66 when Indiana experienced a “great war” with Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee – many residents returned home following Union victory which had ended slavery throughout much of America – Greencastle began experiencing increased prosperity attributable to new manufacturing plants established within its boundaries by private individuals and businesses during that period . Many soldiers returning home also brought with them new ideas about how towns could function better than they had before while also giving impetus to green architecture popularized later by architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright.. During this time there were two schools located within reach: One operated byMethodist Reverend Fenton Goodloe (later known as Mrs Wright), who taught 8th grade girls until her death in 1922; and another operated by Congregationalist Reverend Elijah Hicks until his death in 1938..
