Greencastle is a small town in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,879 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Greencastle was Levi Fenton in 1824. He and his family built a cabin on the banks of the White River. Over time, other families also moved to Greencastle and began to farm the land around it. In 1853, Aaron Burritt founded an agricultural college in Greencastle which became known as Purdue University. In 1907, local banker J L Sprague donated $5,000 towards the construction of a new high school which would serve students from all over Kosciusko County and central Indiana. The new high school was dedicated on November 13th by President Theodore Roosevelt with much fanfare. The post-World War II boom years were tough for Greencastle as many businesses closed their doors or changed hands multiple times during that time period. However, some locals persevered and managed to keep their businesses going even though challenges arose such as 9/11 and government budget cuts throughout 2008-2009%. After years of hard work and determination by citizens, including several community meetings held following 9/11/, Greencastle's first downtown shopping center opened its doors in late 2016! This unique development helped improve commercial prospects for the town while creating jobs for many residents who had been struggling since then Additionally, a number of new housing projects have also been developed throughout recent years bringing more people into town limits; making it one of fastest growing communities in Kosciusko County according to recent reports!
Greencastle was founded in 1824 by Captain John D. Green, who named the town after his friend and fellow officer, James H. Green of Pittsburgh. The first settler in Greencastle was George Wirt, who arrived in 1825. The town continued to grow as farmers and entrepreneurs developed it into a thriving center for commerce and industry. In the early days of Prohibition, Greencastle became an important stop on the illegal liquor trade. In 1933, when Indiana gained its statehood, Greencastle became the capital of Indiana.
