Greencastle is a town in Daviess County,Indiana, United States. The population was 4,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Greencastle is one of the oldest towns in Indiana and was founded by French colonists in 1799. The town was named for Greencastle Hall, which stood on the site of present-day Greencastle. The first white person to live in Greencastle was John Nicholson, who came overland from Canada in 1799. Nicholson's family constructed Nicholson House on the current site of Central High School. A mill built by Nicholas Brotherson located near present-day Market Street produced flour until 1848 when it closed down due to competition from a new mill built by James Hartsfield and Company. In 1853,the first post office was established in Greencastle with Wm Fenton as its first clerk. By 1860, there were six stores and two churches in Greencastle with a population of 350 people. In 1865, General John Tipton moved his Headquarters from Fort Harrison to what is now Harrison Township and recommended that Daviess County be formed out of parts of Hendricks County including this part of Daviess County (then called Hendricks Township). On January 10th 1870, Daviess County formaled under the name "Greencastle Township". On May 11th 1870 Richard Mize granted land east of Main Street (now Fourth Street) to David Baird for development into what would become Bairdtown after he donated $3200 to create it from his estate On December 13th 1870 David Baird purchased 1/2 mile northeast corner lot along Third Avenue for $10 per acre from Thomas Gentry for use as a township lot This property would eventually become Park Place For many years Park Place served as the only house on Park Avenue between Third and Fourth Streets which gave rise to its nickname "The Gentry Estate." WhenDavid Baird died childless in 1893 he bequeathed his remaining land west of Third Avenue back to the government but kept title to Park Place so that people could still use it if they desired

Greencastle, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 4,854 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Tipton County. The first settlers in Greencastle were farmers and their families who arrived around 1825. The town was founded on the site of what is now the Palace Theater which was built in 1828 by John Beasley and burned down in 1832. In 1840, Greencastle had a post office and two churches. A store opened in 1845 and a school was started in 1850. In 1863, Greencastle became the county seat of Tipton County after it was moved from neighboring Randolph County. One of the early businesses in Greencastle was clothing manufacturing which began operations in 1865 with Jens Hesseltine as its president. By 1870, most of the local textile production had stopped because of competition from machines brought over from Great Britain. However, some manufacturers continued to operate until about 1930 including W K Dixon & Sons which made shoes for Sears Roebuck and other stores before closing its doors for good in 1933. Other businesses that operated during this time include a sawmill (1880), grocery store (1910), bank (1920), coal mine (1930s-1940s),auto parts dealership (1945-2000s) and several golf courses including one established in 1895 that still operates today as part of PGA Tour events staged at Quicken Loans Arena
Greencastle is a city in and the county seat of Henry County, Indiana, United States. The population was 14,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Greencastle were Methodist missionaries who came toIndiana in 1814. They built a small cabin on what would later become known as Military Park Boulevard. In 1836, General John Custer's Seventh Cavalry passed through Greencastle while traveling from Fort Wayne to Morristown and stopped at the small town for dinner. After their meal, they founded a school in Greencastle which became known as Custer High School. In 1847, Greencastle was renamed after Major General George Armstrong Custer when he arrived in Indiana with his 6th Infantry Regiment to reinforce the Indian War effort against Native Americans led by Chief Tecumseh and his band of warriors known as the Shawnee Nation. He had been commissioned an American general just two weeks earlier and arrived in Indiana on July 12th of that year with his regiment. On July 15th, he met with Tecumseh at Shawnee village near present-day New Albany and ceded control of all of Ohio to him in a treaty signed that day. It was during this time that General Custer developed strong friendship with then-Governor Daniel Boone who served under him during the war effort. When Boone learned about General Custers' role in helping lead Indian forces into battle against these same Native Americans he offered him command of one of his regiments if he could be successful fighting them head on rather than waiting for reinforcements which would ultimately come too late. Custer accepted this offer and fought bravely against those Native Americans until finally being killed December 17,1876 at Little Big Horn near here while leading an attack from across a river canyon against more than 25 thousand surrounded enemy troops commanded by Chief Black Pipe’s force numbering over 50 thousand warriors including 3 British generals involved with funding and arming these aspiring invaders! Now we know why history calls him "the last great American general". On January 1st 1861 (the day before Kentucky seceded from Union) Greencastle became onehalfof Henry County when it was split off from Star County following a vote by residents there regarding whether or not to join the newly created statehood movement led by Senator James Buchanan (then running for office). This move happened due mainly to Governor John Greggs refusal to give certain privileges – such as voting rights – to Star County citizens which many felt violated what little local autonomy they still had despite becoming one million person incorporated entity within Indiana! After years of annexation attempts by other states - including Michigan - Indiana finally granted full statehood to its Hoosier residents on November 3rd 1912 becoming “the 26th State” within The United States! Prior thereto it has always been considered part thereof but technically considered part of Michigan until now!
