Greencastle is a city in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hendricks County. Greencastle is located on the southern edge of the Kankakee Mountains and has a humid subtropical climate. The city was founded in 1848 by General David Dixon and named for Greencastle, West Virginia. The first Europeans to visit the area were French traders looking for new land to purchase from Native Americans. In 1847, General David Dixon explored what would become Hendricks County and found that he could not find any good land to build on so he named it Greencastle after his home state, Virginia. He built a courthouse and jail in downtown Greencastle soon after its founding and started trading with Indians. On July 4, 1848, Dixon's forces invaded Illinois during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). They were successful in driving Mexico out of America and established American control over most of Mexico territory except Texas where Mexican forces still controlled some areas. In 1850, when Congress created Ulysses S Grant's Department of War (), Greencastle became one of its first cities within the newly formed department along with Springfield (now Peoria) and St Louis(now St Louis Park). The city reached its peak growth around this time as many people moved into central Indiana from surrounding counties because of limited agricultural land available due to low rainfall levels throughout much of central Illinois during this time period. With new transportation options becoming available such as railroads andboats coming into existence during this time period things began to change for Greencastle as well as other nearby towns which saw their populations grow rapidly thanks to increased education opportunities offered within these local communities as well as natural resources such as coalmines being developed nearby making jobs available in both townspeople and farmers alike. After years of growth however central Indiana experienced significant droughts starting around1900 which led to an overall decrease in population density across much of central Illinois until recently due primarily to changing weather patterns however there are currently efforts being made by local officials within Hendricks County towards increasing production within Central Indiana through industrial development projects associated with Carrier Air Lines Incorporated (CALI) located just outside town limits – providing numerous employment opportunities for locals across several industries including manufacturing; trucking; aviation; healthcare; construction; logistics; nursing care & long term care!

Greencastle is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Indiana and has been established since 1795. The city was originally named for Revolutionary War General George Rogers Clark. The early history of Greencastle can be traced back to 1795 when Captain John Donelson and his forces destroyed Fort Donelson on the banks of the Wabash River. The fortification had been built by British general James Wilkinson in order to protect French settlers who were living near Fort Duquesne on the Ohio River. After Donelson's victory over Wilkinson, Greencastle became known as "the new Fort Donelson." Greencastle quickly grew into a thriving community due to its location within easy reach of both Indian Territory and other parts of what is now Indiana. In 1824, Greencastle became an official town in addition to its prior role as a military post. This growth led to increased traffic and pollution from nearby factories, which caused many residents to move out of town during the late 1800s. However, many others chose to stay and make their home in what would become one of America's most polluted cities thanks to coal mining operations that took place throughout Greencastle during this time period. Today, much like earlier versions of Greencastle, it is an environmentally friendly city with a strong focus on sustainability
