Greencastle is a small town in central Indiana with a population of about 12,000. The current mayor is Ron Iverson and the town was founded in 1837 by Captain John Green and his wife, Lucy. The first settler in Greencastle was Capt. John Green who arrived in 1837. He and his family built a log cabin on the banks of the White River. After several years, they moved to what is now the southeast side of town where they started farming land that became known as "Greencastle Plantation". In 1840, Capt. John's son James moved to Greencastle from Kentucky with his family and began operation of a sawmill which later became known as "James & Sons Mill". In 1851, James' grandson Amos came to Greencastle from Hardin County, Kentucky and opened a grocery store and post office called "Amos’ Mill". Two years later, Amos’ son Elijah bought the store from him and continued operations until 1907 when it closed for good. In 1857-58, Isaac Bates built the first schoolhouse in Greencastle which served as an elementary school until it burned down in 1861. A new schoolhouse was built shortly thereafter but it also burned down soon after being completed. In 1865-66, Rev Wm Hesseltine erected an iron frame church which served as the community's only religious building for many years before it was destroyed by fire in 1908. A large brick courthouse replaced the old courthouse which was razed in 1906 following severe damage caused by fire. The present courthouse was constructed between 1922-24 replacing another earlier building that had been located just east of downtown on First Street (now State Road 46). It has been used as both a court house and local government center since its construction

The local paper mill closed down in the early 2000s but production continued until 2012 for a few months before ceasing operations completely due to economic problems. A new paper mill opened up in 2013 and continues to produce paper products such as envelopes and napkins. According to the 2010 census, White (non-Hispanic) residents make up 95% of the population; Black or African American residents also make up 5%. Hispanic residents make up 1% of the population
