This shop sold various types of optical equipment including telescopes, microscopes and binoculars. The shop was successful and continued to operate until 1914. From 1914-1918, the Central Glass Company operated in Greencastle as a retailer of optical products. During this time, the company also manufactured glass lenses for use in telescopes and microscopes. In 1918, the Central Glass Company merged with the American Optometric Corporation to form American Optical Corporation. During this time, American Optical Corporation became one of the leading producers of optical products in America.
Greencastle is a small, unincorporated community in Hendricks County, Indiana. It is located on the east bank of the White River. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Greencastle was John Martin and his family who came from Virginia in 1785. They built a log cabin on the north bank of the White River. The town site was laid out by John Boudreau in 1815 and named after him. A post office was established at Greencastle in 1829, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The depot on the White River served as a transportation hub for settlers moving westward during the 1850s and 1860s. Railroad construction began near Greencastle in 1854, and by 1870 had routed all but one mile of traffic through the town center. The railroad bypassed Greencastle altogether within two decades, however, leading to its decline as a commercial center during those years. Today, much of what once constituted Greencastle's downtown district remains vacant or underutilized due to its small size and remote location; nevertheless, many residents continue to call this section their "backyard." One notable exception is an open-air shopping mall that anchors Westfield Shopping Center adjacent to Interstate 65 south of town proper–a development that has helped revitalize downtown since it opened in 2001. Despite being one of America's smallest communities by population density (just over 100 people per square mile), Greencastle has seen some significant growth over recent years thanks to its proximity to larger metropolitan areas such as Indianapolis and Chicago – developments that have drawn attention both from outside residents and local businesses alike for their positive impact on economic vitality and quality of life. Greencastle is a town in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous town in Tippecanoe County and one of the six towns in Pence County. Greencastle was founded in 1824 as part of the territorial government of old-time Tippecanoe County. The first permanent settler in Greencastle was Shedd Chilton, who built a log cabin on what is now Elm Street. He and his wife were the only residents until 1828 when Elijah Stroud moved to Greencastle from Madison Township, Illinois. A year later, John Stephenson also arrived and bought land around present day Market Square. In 1830 John Stephenson's son Nathaniel erected a log cabin on present day Court House Square (now Elm Street). That same year George Washington Farnsworth arrived from Canada with his family and set up business along Elm Street. In 1834 he married Martha Jordon and became known as George Washington Farnsworth Jr.. The first store opened in Greencastle by Farnsworth was called the "Farnsworth Store". The post office at Greencastle began operations on December 4, 1832 under postal name "New Castle." It was renamed "Greencastle" on May 10, 1840 by act of Congress following the company town formation movement started by President James K. Polk during his term as president. The first postmaster general at that time was Gideon Welles Rogers Sr.. On November 15th 1850, Edwin Ladd became postmaster general after Welles Rogers' death and served until April 25th 1865 when Samuel Gridley took over for him…. By 1860 there were ninety four residents living in Greencastletown; twenty two of those lived along Elm street which became primarily home to women… About this time many settlers decided to move away from central Indiana because of poor soil quality or lack thereof….. For several years (1860-1870) no new arrivals came to Green castle; however farmsteads grew rapidly aroundMarket square due to early production techniques such as irrigation water storage devices that could be used year round save for occasional months of freezes or floods” (Walker 321). In 1870 Norwich Mather established a gristmill dealership near where he currently resides off ElmStreet just north of Main Avenue/Old National Bank building now known as Secondhand Clothing Mart also established residency there about this time according to Walker (322). By 1880 there were about sixty five residents living within greencastletown limits with forty seven located along Elm street especially residential areas west side between 2nd avenue/Main Ave intersection east side between 3rd avenue/Old National Bank Building current site WSUA radio station campus extension east side Cedar Lane homebuilt garage across from courthouse still standing today In 1901 David Biddle organized farmers market out back corner lot next door Old Wilson Drugstore closed down shutters last seen 1973
