Greencastle is a small village in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,645 at the 2010 census. The name of the village was given to it by General David Farragut and his staff during their visit to the area in 1847. The first settler in Greencastle was James Atkinson, who arrived in 1827. He built a cabin on the present site of Greencastle Middle School. A post office called Greencastle was established in 1829, and remained in operation until 1907. When Kosciusko County was organized on November 3, 1848, Green castle became part of its territory. On February 15, 1850, George Capps purchased land south of town from John Hetzel for $120 dollars. In 1862–1863 he laid out a road from Kosciusko to Greencastle which became known as Capps Road. Greencastle had a population of 350 by 1870; however it declined during the 1800s due to loss of jobs and development outside the village boundaries. By 1900 only 113 people lived within the limits of what is now Greencastle Village; many moved away as coal mining and other industry took hold throughout central Indiana during that time period. The last resident died in 1941; however much remains unchanged from its heyday such as Grange Hall (built 1886), Atkinson Cabin (1927), and Courthouse (1906). Many buildings were brought down over time such as Mrs.'s Store(1892), Bank (1899), School House(1907), Old Post Office(1900), etc.—a process that began with demolition when new houses were built around 1960-1970 enlarging school district’s budget for operations but not preserving old buildings or furniture which could easily be replaced with new construction materials without affecting historical values—making it difficult for visitors today to experience some aspects directly associated with local history like grange halls or old post office

The new county courthouse was built in Greencastle in 1876 and remains an important landmark in that town today. In 1912, Greencastle established its own school system which continues to this day. Prior to that time all children in Greencastle were taught by their parents or local farmers who had barns/houses for classrooms and pupils attended local public schools from age 6-18 years old.
