A store and hotel were erected soon thereafter and by 1836, all of these had been destroyed by natural disasters such as floods or fire. In 1847-48 an act under the US federal government's Morrill Act provided for land grants to Purdue University students who fulfilled certain requirements such as residence in one of twenty-five school districts within Indiana; teaching for six years; service in two years on a board of directors; or becoming citizens of this country. For much of this period (1850-1858), Purdue students living near campus attended classes at Village Hall while their families went grocery shopping or took walks around village center

Greencastle was a small town in central Indiana, United States, until the early 1800s. It is now a ghost town and census-designated place. The population of Greencastle at the 2010 census was 582. The first settlers in what is now Greencastle were farmers who arrived from Illinois in 1814. They built homes on an old plantation near present-day Streetsboro and planted corn, potatoes, and other vegetables. By 1825, many of these farmers had moved away to start new lives elsewhere because of poor soil quality and bad weather conditions. In 1827, two men named James Dickey and Wm Hargrave came to Greencastle from Kentucky with their families and began trading goods for goods from the local Indians. In 1830 they started a store which continued to be open until it burned down in 1865. In 1840, George Washington Dixon bought some land adjacent to where the current city plaza stands today for $1 per acre (about $40 per square mile). Dixon renamed his holdings "Dixon's Purchase" after himself. He used this land as part of his business operations for over 50 years before selling it in 1916 to J P Morgan & Company Limited Partnership for $5 million dollars ($). Morgan built an 1893 office tower on top of one of Dixon's original parcels which remained standing until it was destroyed by fire in 1963. In 1850, three people named John Whetstone settled on lands between Main Street (now Northwest Expressway) and Indian Creek; these acres are now known as Westland Park . One year later they founded the first school here - Woodstock School . After lasting only six months there were too many problems with teachers being paid by the hour instead of by grade levels so another school was organized - East High School . This school lasted almost 40 years before it closed due to financial difficulties . From this point forward Greencastle became an all-male operation with girls only attending East High School during special occasions or when their parents could not afford their tuition costs.. By 1870 there were 10 businesses operating out of town: 5 grocery stores/merchants, 2 bootmakers/shoe dealers/, 1 millinery shop/, 1 bakery/. At this time there also lived 100 residents making up about 60% of the total population... agriculture still occupied a predominant role; fruits and vegetables gathered primarily from local gardens while stocks of flour, milk and eggs were raised nearby; lumbering provided most needed commercial services including sawmillwork etc.. However,...the death penalty had become more prevalent throughout Indianadue largelyto abolitionist efforts among legislators preceding its ratification... transportation improvements such as railways led to increased trade within town limits; nevertheless......commerce barely kept up with increasing population density requirements......... Grocery stores increased greatly during prohibition era butchery declined significantly....... CoalminingADepthsidenceofthecentralIndianacoalfieldledtotoproducingnewcoalminers intotheregion;; however,...this did not last long as production rapidly dropped off after 1890 when new investments were made in oil production......... Manufacturing gradually gained ground but competition caused layoffs throughout 1920s............ Population decreased steadily through 1930s although some newcomers arrived during that decade............. By 1940 there were just 6 businesses left..................................... The last business closed up shop around 1960....................... By 1990 Greencastle had completely disappeared leaving behind only memories.................................

In 1851, Greencastle became the county seat of Vanderburgh County after being chosen over Crystal City. It remained that way until 1870 when it was moved to Terre Haute. Greencastle's economy changed substantially during World War II when production of munitions increased as demand for war materials increased throughout America. The town also experienced growth in the late 20th century as a result of suburban development and new businesses such as health care and restaurant industries%.
