Greencastle is a city in and the county seat of Clark County, Indiana, United States. The population was 992 according to the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Clark County by population size. Greencastle is also home to the Greencastle- Mexico City International Airport. The first Europeans to visit what is now Clark County were French traders and missionaries who traveled through the area in 1795. A French post on the Ohio River served as a point of entry for goods destined for France from areas east of Fort Wayne, including present-day Indianapolis. In 1802, General Anthony Wayne founded what became known as Greencastle after receiving an order from Napoleon I for troops to attack Fort Dearborn on the Chicago River. The town site was chosen because it would be less likely to be captured by Native Americans or raiders and because its location made it difficult for them to attack other settlements in Kentuckiana (present-day Indiana). The first record of settlement occurred on October 1, 1803 when three men named Jameson bought land near what is now downtown Greencastle from Pierre Lacrosse de Frontenac. On December 5, 1803, William Henshaw donated land off of State Road 6 south of town that he had purchased from Lacrosse de Frontenac two years earlier; this land would become home to many businesses and homes that still line Main Street today. On January 8, 1804, John White donated 400 acres (16 km²) southeast of town along State Road 7 which formed part of what would later become called White’s Mill Pond Park; White was one of the original investors in nearby Dunkerton Township. A group of men led by Asa Gray set out from Greencastle on July 1, 1805 in search of a new homebase while they awaited reinforcements sent by General Anthony Wayne with orders to capture Fort Dearborn at Chicago River junction; they arrived at Miami Lake on September 10th and encamped there until winter set in. They then followed Starved Rock Trail northwest until they reached Mount Vernon Heights where they built their headquarters tentatively titled “Henchman’s Tavern” before settling down for the winter at East Indian Hills about 11 miles (18 km) southeast of Greencastle on November 15th under cover of darkness..
