On October 1st 1870 due to funding secured by then Mayor Wm Trowbridge (), all public schools within Porter County were consolidated into one new system under the name "Porter Community Schools". A local non-profit organization known asthe Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) began operating out of a small building located at Seventh Street and Main Street in 1957 (). As enrollment increased throughout community colleges across America during the 1960s (), VFD morphed into its current form - Shadegone Volunteer Fire Department (SHADE) - with full membership granted by incorporation on November 15th 1966 . The late 1800s were a time of great change for Greencastle with newly arrived immigrants starting to assimilate into American culture. Many new businesses opened up in downtown Greencastle while others closed down or merged into existing businesses over time. This period also saw an increase in social activity as well as cultural diversity with citizens coming together to enjoy various types of entertainments including concerts, plays, dancers etcetera often bringing their families along for the fun! In 1954 Mayor Harry JONES Parks inauguration took place after serving as Mayor of Gary through 1946 when he resigned due to health concerns following a heart attack). During Parks tenure many notable improvements were made to downtown Greencastle including widening streetslights and erecting several public buildings such as City Hall (now called United States Bank)…the movie theater …and Post Office (now called Sears Tower). These additions not only helped boost business but also added much needed curb appeal given that prior to these facilities being constructed few residents had any knowledge about or association with downtown Greensboro!
