In Greencastle, Indiana, the first handguns were brought into the town in 1892. The town began to issue firearms licenses in 1903 and continued to do so until 1940. In that time period, handgun ownership was illegal in Greencastle.
Greencastle is a small town in Indiana, United States. The population was 2,584 at the 2010 census. It is the hometown of Indianapolis Colts cornerback D'Qwell Jackson. Greencastle is also the home of Purdue University's football team and has been called "The Birthplace of America's Basketball" due to its role in starting the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament. Greencastle was founded by three men: John Green, David Green and Solomon Young. John Greenworthy started trading goods from his farm while David Green built a store on Main Street in 1814. Solomon Young founded a school in 1827 which became Purdue University in 1865. In 1898, when Bryant Gumbel purchased land east of town for $1 million, he renamed it "Greencastle". According to legend, Gumbel found an elk tooth buried under some trees near his home and decided that this would be the site for a new college campus. The first building on campus was erected on what is now State Road 517 northeast of town - now known as Huston Hall Drive - in 1903. In 1954, Purdue offered its students their choice between community or technical colleges; student activism forced the university to choose technical schools over community colleges and led to Purdue's current form as one large university with several campuses throughout Indiana and Ohio. In 1966, Goodyear Corporation moved its headquarters from Phoenixville, Pennsylvania to nearby Elkhart County after selling their Tire & Rubber company there. That same year also saw construction begin on what would become Memorial Stadium; it opened in 1967 and remained used through all but one season of the NFL's Stroudsburg Steelers (the only team ever To play at Memorial Stadium). From 1971-1973 Pinellas County commissioners replaced county judges with elected officials who were then able to levy taxes against Goodyear corporations based on sales within their jurisdiction - essentially giving Goodyear permission to move out without having any say over where they relocated or how much money they received for their new HQ location! In 1978-1979 local voters approved measures allowing tuition increases totaling 50% along with other changes made by then-Governor Frank Roe; this led directly to budget deficits which have continued until today despite increasing tuition prices each year since 1999! In 2002-2003 state legislators passed House Bill 4396 (The Hoosier Restoration Act) which repealed all non−discrimination laws currently governing IU Bloomington employees including those pertaining housing discrimination − effectively legalizing affirmative action programs at IU Bloomington! This mixed blessing caused many residents of good natured Elkhart County outside of downtown Greencastle significant anger as well as disappointment given that most residents are either employed by/associated with IU Bloomington or rely upon services provided byIU Bloomington faculty members! Today there are more than 1,000 private businesses located within walking distance of Interstate 465 serving both academic research institutions like Purdue University and major manufacturing companies like Textron Inc., Lucas Oil Refining Company and Ford Motor Company among others; numerous restaurants exist including Subway sandwich shops across town plus Taco Bells just east off I-465 along US Highways 56 & 35W! All told nearly 30% of job growth occurring statewide during past 10 years has occurred within 500 feet+ radius OF I-465... yet still very little progress has been made towards densifying this area into a more vibrant cityscape

Greencastle is a town in and the county seat of Washington Township, in St. Joseph County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Greencastle was founded as a small log settlement on December 3, 1824 by George Hinkle and others from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The first post office was established in Greencastle on January 6, 1830. In 1836 Greencastle had a population of just sixteen people and it served as the western terminus of an Indian trade route that connected Fort Wayne with Pascagoula on the Mississippi River. Greencastle became an agricultural center after its founders acquired land near present-day Merrillville for farming purposes. The community developed into a large city by 1880 thanks to lumber sales generated by its location adjacent to two major logging rivers: the White River and Big Branch Creek. During this time period businesses included breweries (the first being built in 1881), shoe stores (1885), livery stables (1910), grocery stores (1914), banks (1920), electrical companies (1925) and several clothing manufactories including Sears & Roebuck & Co., Macy's Inc., Northern Illinois Clothing Company and Jiggsons Clothing Company before World War II when much of the manufacturing activity shifted to jobs in nearby Gary or Muncie.. In 1960 Greencastle became one of fourteen townships within Washington Township when that township was created from portions of Delaware Township and Newton Township.. In 1979 Greencastle joined Washington Township as a separate municipality.. By 2000 there were only three buildings remaining from when Greencastle was founded - all dating back to either 1824 or 1830- making it one of America’s earliest stagecoach stops located exclusively within a single municipal unit.. The village has experienced various incarnations throughout its history; starting out as primarily agricultural until becoming more heavily industrialized during shamefully difficult times following World War II when most industry fled downtownGary while much remained in Muncie or other neighboring townships; finally becoming predominantly residential following suburban growth beginning around 1970 despite some commercial efforts by entrepreneurs like Edwin Saretsky Jr.(founder/CEO/owner/operator/director emeritus) who leased space inside what is now known as Farmers Market Place(later IndyStar Plaza) before eventually selling it all off to real estate developers in 2002; culminating with further development pending approval from City Hall which occurred during Mayor Greg Ballard’s term in office late last year resulting in manytransformations including demolition of several historic buildings(including Farmers Market Place)--resulting ultimately increased retail density along busy I-465 corridor adjacent to new apartment complexes etc.; creating an anchor business district that anchors both sides of Main Street running through downtown providing easy access to daily commerce etc.--making this once small town something quite different compared to other municipalities experiencing similar transformation processes across central Indiana etc... All told it has been an interesting journey over time but one that will come full circle soon enough with redevelopment plans currently moving forward for another large shopping center--likely taking up valuable parking lot space currently used for agriculture--just north east thereof
Greencastle is a city in and the county seat of Greencastle County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Greencastle was James Wray who arrived in 1786. In 1814, John Tipton founded what is now known as Tiptonville on land he had acquired from Wray. The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location as a crossroads for travelers between Indy and Vincennes. In 1834, Greencastle was made an incorporated village with $5 per capita income. On July 1, 1839, it became an independent city with $10 per capita income after vote by the citizens over objections from Vincennes which would have given it more autonomy but failed to gain approval from the state legislature. In 1865, when Adams County was organized, Greencastle became its county seat. The following year saw heavy fighting during the American Civil War while both armies passed through town on their way to battle at Perryville near Fort Wayne; much damage resulted including several homes destroyed or damaged beyond repair and many barns and other buildings burned or looted. By 1870 Greencastle's population had reached 11,000 residents; however by 1880 its figure had dwindled to 7800 residents because of increased competition from larger towns such asAnderson and Lafayette within Adams County. During World War II (1941-1945), Greencastle played a major role in providing munitions supplies for the war effort; many people worked at local munitions plants until 1945 when they were discharged into returning home communities like Anderson or Lafayette where they began new lives as farmers or workers again
