Greencastle is a small city in the southern Indiana region. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. Greencastle is located on the eastern edge of metropolitan Indianapolis and is bordered by LaPorte County to the east, Evansville to the south, and Hendricks County to the west. The area now known as Greencastle was first settled in 1828 by French Canadians who had come from Quebec City. The town of Greencastle was founded by George Washington Parke and his brother-in-law Nicholas Biddle in what is now LaPorte County. In 1831, Greencastle became part of Evansville when that city were merged with nearby Saint Josephs. In 1881, Greencastle incorporated as a city and began growth which would continue until it reached its present size. In 1907, it became one of several cities consolidated into the larger Indianapolis metropolitan area under then-Mayor John Gregg Sr.. Thisgrowth continued until 1970 when Indianapolis merged with El Paso and Texas City to form The Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) of Indianapolis/El Paso/Texas City. The University of Notre Dame has a campus in Greencastle since 1893 while Purdue University has been located there since 1873. Other major employers include JBL Audio headquartered on Main Street across from Memorial Stadium and True Religion jeans store located next door to Bankers Life Fieldhouse (now Lucas Oil Stadium). One local landmark that no longer exists is Pritchard's restaurant which served up some memorable burgers during college football games throughout the 1990s for students at USF Polytechnic School before moving out of state for good in 2002 citing health concerns about living near an amusement park birthplace such as Nickelodeon Land Park used for playing fields between 1984-1994 according to Business Wire . According to WTHR 20 years ago, Pritchard's restaurant made headlines after employees popularized green cheese dip called "Pizza Dip" at games against Purdue University during their "Big Ten Tournament appearances". Greencastle, Indiana is a small town located in south central Indiana. The population was 5,872 as of the 2010 census. It has been since 1837 that Greencastle has been a part of the city of Indianapolis. The first settler in Greencastle was Seth Smith and his family who arrived in 1837. The town site was surveyed by John Mapp and named after General James Wilkinson, the Governor of Louisiana during the American Revolution. The first store in Greencastle opened on Main Street on December 1, 1837. In 1840, General George Crockett established a post office at Greencastle with two mail carriers per day service to serve all of south central Indiana. Greencastle grew rapidly due to its proximity to Indianapolis and its inherent railroad access which made it an important commercial center for both regionally and nationally during the late 19th century. During this time, Greencastle also became known as "The City of Industry." Because of its location within easy driving distance of major cities such as Chicago and Cincinnati, Greencastle became an important trade center for southern Indiana during this period. In 1907-1908, numerous new buildings were constructed in downtown Greencastle including three hospitals (the First Methodist Church (1887), the Masonic Temple (1907) and Sears & Roebuck Department Store (1910)), four banks (First National Bank (1875), Chase National Bank (1900), Metropolitan Life Insurance Company(1920)) and various other businesses including several department stores including Macy's Department Store (1890) and JCPenney's Department Store (1886). These structures are now included within Old State Capitol District #2 Historic District which encompasses over 100 buildings from early 20th century Indianapolis business districts. A variety of architectural styles were popular during this time including Italianate/Gothic Revival, Spanish Colonial/Masonry Gothic etc.. Many prominent residents from these eras include architect Julia Morgan Dunham; industrialist Gustavus Wirtz; mayor James Buchanan Woodruff; physician Drury Hodge; educator Leonard Pusey; newspaper publisher Eugene Herrman; actor Maurice Chevalier among others
