In 1871, Greencastle became the first city in Indiana to pass a Gun Owners' Protection Act. That same year, the James K. Polk Administration proposed using the National Guard to quell an uprising by anti-immigrant sentiment in Greencastle. The measure failed to gain enough support and was not enacted. The first gun grip manufactory in Greencastle was established in 1892 by John Tilton and his brother Amos Tilton. The company manufactured handguns, shotguns, rifles, and pistols. In 1924, the Tilton brothers merged with another firearm manufacturer, Browning Firearms Company of Indianapolis. That merger led to the production of both revolvers and assault rifles at that company's plant until it closed in 1979. In 1949, American Armory Corporation joined forces with Sturm Ruger & Co., Inc., creating one of the largest firearms manufacturers in America. That partnership led to production of both revolvers and assault rifles at that company's plant until it closed in 1984. From 1906 through 1986, Colt Arms Manufacturing Company was headquartered in Greencastle; however, its operations were moved to Hartford (Conn.) during that time period because of government regulation of firearms manufacturing nationwide. On July 1st 1968, Colt Industries announced plans for a major restructuring which would result in its closure of three plants--the Toledo facility (in Ohio), Long Island City Facility (in Queens), and Westchester County Facility (in New York)--and the relocation of some jobs from each location to other facilities around the country as part of what is known as "the Great White North" Shift。 On October 6th 1968—just two months after Colt Industries announced its plans for closures—Greencastle residents demonstrated against those layoffs by occupying their city hall building; meanwhile, pro-gun control protesters gathered outside the building carrying signs reading "No Guns Here! No Grits!"

Greencastle is a small town located in the southernmost part of the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census, down from 2,023 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The name Greencastle comes from Indian word "kuhnacotta," meaning "place where rice grows." The first settler in what would become Greencastle was John Fenton in 1824. The town sprang up around this cotton plantation and grew rapidly during the 1800s as farmers brought their families here to escape agricultural pollution back east. When railroads arrived in 1853 and freight traffic increased, Greencastle became an important center for shipping goods between Indianapolis and Louisville, Kentucky. By 1910, Greencastle had reached its peak as a manufacturing center with heavy reliance on paper products such as pulp and paper mills that operated until the early 21st century. However, since then many businesses have closed or been relocated to other parts of Indiana or out of America altogether due to changed economic conditions and competition from foreign manufacturers alike. Today much of downtown Greencastle remains abandoned; however there are several heritage buildings that remain standing including: the old cotton gin (now used as a library), courthouse square (home to several museums), and Springtown Baptist Church which dates back to 1892 when it was one of only two churches in town after Congregationalist missionaries moved into nearby Northside . Despite this history there has never been any formal demolition or redevelopment attempt – instead most buildings have been left largely unoccupied save for a few museum windows which now provide views onto empty lots across Main Street . In recent years a concerted effort has begun by city officials to revive downtown Greencastle by creating new streetscapes along main thoroughfares with restaurants and shops open late into the night; developing an outdoor market adjacent to Main Street ; renovating historic homes within walking distance; adding more public art throughout town; and hosting events like summer festivals/ carnivals/movies etc.; all while maintaining some degree of control over development within boundaries set by City Council members

In 1870, Greencastle became one of five townships formed within Indiana under Act 711 of the General Assembly. This act created new opportunities for entrepreneur enterprise within Indiana and allowed for increased economic development within its borders. Over time, Greencastle has become known as an attractive location for businesses and individuals looking to settle down – whether they were looking to start their own business or expand an existing one. In addition, this growing community has been able to contribute significantly to the growth of nearby cities and towns over the years.
Greencastle is located in Howard County, Indiana, and is one of the most populous cities in the county. The city was founded on November 3, 1827 by J. W. Green and his brother-in-law Ira Wilkinson as a small community called "New Harmony." The name came from the local green jonquil plants that grew abundantly in the area. New Harmony quickly became a shipping center for goods coming from the Ohio River Valley and other parts of Indiana. Businesses such as grocery stores, flour mills, tannerys, breweries and cotton ginners developed in the town during its early years. During World War II, Greencastle played an important role in military production due to its location on U.S.-Canadian border near Fort Wayne and its access to ample supplies of foodstuffs and munitions. The city also received large amounts of federal funding for building war materiel storage facilities which helped support wartime operations. In 1949, Greencastle was renamed Greencastle Township after township president Hemanus Pugh Weedon Jr.. One year later, it became part ofHoward County when it was created from land east of Indianapolis taken up by that municipality pursuant to an act of Congress known as the Morrill Act of 1862.
