Greencastle, Indiana is a city in Putnam County, Indiana, on the border of Ohio and Indiana. The population was 17,953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Greencastle were French missionaries in 1679. Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette explored the area in 1693 and named it after his homeland – France. French traders also visited Greencastle during this time and established a post there in 1714. In 1802, United States troops burned down Fort Dearborn (later renamed Fort Harrison) near present day Greencastle to remove Indian artifacts from the area. The town became a stop on stagecoach routes between Cincinnati and Indianapolis beginning in 1810. In 1825, local businessman James Hays organized a group of farmers to improve irrigation systems for their land around Greencastle. This early effort led to other civic improvements such as the construction of an important jail in 1836 and an Odd Fellows hall in 1840 that still stands today. The town's first school was built as a log cabin on what is now Five Mile Road in 1845 by teacher Mrs Mary Stephensonbaugh. A new school was built on Main Street between Highways 422nd and 425th Streets within two years of its opening; this building remains standing today as part of the downtown core of Greencastle Historic District. In 1865, General Andrew Johnson ordered all states east of Missouri to secede from the Union because he felt that slavery should be abolished throughout all America regardless of state boundaries – this included Putnam County which became one half of Lake Michigan Township when it joined Indiana Territory following its admission into the Union). As a result of these events, many residents left Greencastle for Kansas or Illinois while others moved westward into Iowa Territory (now Oklahoma). By 1870, only about 60 people remained living in Greencastle; however, by 1880 there were over 1200 residents living within its limits! Greencastle is a town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,599 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1817 by Nicholas Green and his wife Eliza Mayhew and named for Greencastle Township in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The two towns merged to form Greencastle on January 1, 1907. The first post office at Greencastle was established in 1818 and was called Newburgh. It was moved to its present location in 1827. The first store at Greencastle opened on December 3, 1827, and sold groceries and other supplies. On October 15, 1830, the name of the town changed to Greencastle after Nicholas Green's uncle Prentice died there from a hunting accident while Attempting To Cross A Creek In Front Of His House At Newburgh; Prentice had been staying with his aunt Polly at her home that day. The first school in Greencastle was built on the corner of Main Street and State Road 590 on September 4, 1830. On July 6, 1833 the school burned down due to a storm that hit the area; it reopened three weeks later with new construction including a barn and classroom inside an old mill across the street from where it used to stand. In 1840 when Clear Lake Dam near Fort Wayne blew out causing flooding that destroyed many homes along State Road 590 between Clear Lake National Wildlife Refuge & US-24 (now I-65), many people were forced to flee their homes as well as what little property they had left behind because they fear for their safety should more rain or snow fall during this time of drought which would also have caused damage to properties downstream from Clear Lake Dam (the Flint Hills).
