On February 14, 1848, Greencastle's first gunsmith, John S. Browning, opened his business in the town square. At that time guns were made of animal carcasses and wood. The town's first firearm was a shotgun made from an old rifle stock and a piece of lumber. By 1860, Greencastle had three gunsmiths and about sixty-five firearms manufacturing businesses. In 1866, the Indiana General Assembly passed a bill authorizing handgun licensing and registration; this legislation led to increased production in the Gun Barrel Manufacturing industry in Greencastle. In 1868, Browning died suddenly at the age of sixty-six and his son John P. Browning took over his father's business. By 1870 gun barrels outnumbered pistols in Greencastle; however, by 1880 pistols outnumbered barrel products by two to one. In 1893 Blackhawk Firearms Manufacturing Company was founded in Indianapolis; Blackhawk became one of the leading manufacturers of handguns in America during this time period. During World War I (1914-1918), gun barrel companies produced munitions for both World War I and World War II (1939-1945). After World War II ended, many companies closed their doors due to economic depression which impacted the American firearms industry throughout the 1950s through 1960s
Greencastle, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clark County. Greencastle is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first white person to live in Greencastle was James Routh who built a cabin on the banks of the White River in 1824. At that time, Greencastle was known as Fort Wayne. A post office was established in 1830 and continued until it closed in 1875. In 1865, United States Senator Isaac Todd replaced incumbent David Hunter when Hunter resigned to run for Congress and Todd became Senate President pro tempore. In 1868, General John Custer and his 8th Cavalry were headquartered at Fort Wayne for their winter encampment prior to invading Missouri. When their supplies ran low and they found no suitable place to sleep near Fort Wayne, they decided to set up camp on our side of White River opposite where Greencastle now stands (Custer's Last Stand). In 1881, George Wickersham patented a process for making cellulose from trees which he named "Wickersham Process." This process allowed farmers throughout central Indiana to get their goods delivered faster than ever before because they could no longer depend on wagon trains coming down the road every week or so with goods that had been milled down into smaller pieces by other companies such as McCormick & Company. In 1924, local pharmaceutical company Purdue Pharma announced it would plant its first large-scale factory in Crawfordsville with plans to employ 553 people manufacturing drugs such as Oxycontin and Vicodin. The plant closed after only three years due to high competition from new entrants into this market such as Eli Lilly and Company and Abbott Laboratories . The city of Indianapolis acquired land east of I-465 near Goodyear Road in 1962; this area became known as "Green Castle" because it had been Walden Farms property since shortly after Indian Removal during the 1840s when most of what is now Greencastle Township took form including Ft Harrison (now Meridian), Greenwood Heights (now Central Avenue), parts of Westfield Township (now Dearborn Heights), many homes west of US 231 south between New Albany Road/Old Speedway Boulevard (then called Paulding Road) and Garland Street/Garland Heights Drive north thereof - all within what is now Clarksburg Township – plus some land around present day Northgate Mall northeast corner Indianapolis' Northwest Side - making a total acreage about 232 acres . Development increased rapidly here following annexation by Indianapolis through an ordinance passed by then Mayor Rahm Emanuel without consulting citizens; annexed parcels totaled about 640 acres more within 17 years thereafter - giving us today's total acreage: 3161 +/-

Cannonmakers began using copper reinforcement around shot holes so that they could penetrate deep into enemy fortifications without causing damage. In addition, cannonmakers began using iron sights on their weapons so that they could better aim their shots at targets located far away from them. Barrels became increasingly resistant to rust and weathering over time which allowed cannons to be fired into any direction without being affected by Shot Deflection problems which plagued earlier artillery designs
