Greencastle is an unincorporated community in Porter County, Indiana, United States. The population was 378 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Greencastle Township was Nicholas Hinson in 1814. The town of Greencastle was laid out in 1836 by John Brougham and James Murchison. It became a station on the Richmond and Western Railroad. In 1839, the town had a population of 185 people and it grew to 621 people by 1840. By 1850, Greencastle had a post office, schoolhouse, churches and stores. A store opened near present day US-31 and US-24 in 1853 and the population reached 1,085 by 1860. In 1861, Greencastle incorporated as a village under the name of "Bellefontaine." It lost its incorporation status in 1865 when Porter County was organized into districts. In 1870, Bellefontaine had 987 residents; it lost its status as a village again that year when it merged with nearby New Palestine to form Porter County's first city (New Palestine had been founded earlier that year). In 1880, Bellefontaine's population topped 1,000 for the first time; however, it lost its status as city due to lack of growth or development over the next several decades. In 1910–11 there were 1,827 residents living in Bellefontaine; however this number decreased to 803 by 1920–21 due to both World War I and Prohibition combined effects which caused many businesses to close their doors during prohibition times). In 1970s/1980s Bellefontaine experienced rapid growth due mostly to annexation by neighboring towns - most notably New Palestine which annexed much of what is now known as Parkersburg - but also because of efforts made through marketing campaigns led by then mayor Ed Sniderman allowing for wide variety of retail options available within walking distance from City Hall including restaurants such as Sloppy Joe’s Pizza & Pasta Shop (later Papa John’s), Ace Hardware Store (later Jiffy Lube) and Tim Hortons Coffee shop later Starbucks locations within blocks from City Hall making it easy for residents to get around without having to go too far outside their neighborhoods The city ceased operations after Sniderman’s death suddenly before any annexation plans could take place resulting in large scale budget deficits that continue today . Most recently some redevelopment has taken place with new apartment complexes being built along Main Street which runs between Bellefontaine Boulevard/Old Market Road eastward towards Indianapolis Airport while other developments are taking place north off Old Market Road just past Interstate 65 expansion project area known as "Northeast" side housing developments have started up since 2000 providing much needed residential rental units especially near airport areas making downtown appearance more muted although still visible if looking southeast on main street
Greencastle is a city in and the county seat of Greencastle County, Indiana, United States. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. It began as a small agricultural community on the banks of the North Fork of the White River in 1827. The town was named for General George Armstrong Custer, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office opened in 1829, and Greencastle became a town on December 12, 1830. On July 1, 1837, Greencastle incorporated as a city under an act of the state legislature. In 1907 it annexed part of neighboring Mishawaka. The city was hit by a tornado on October 20, 1965 which destroyed most of its downtown area and killed three people.
