In 1881, Greencastle, Indiana became the home of the first binocular company in the United States. The company was started by a group of businessmen who were looking for a new way to view things around town. They decided to create a binocular company because they believed that it would be easier and more efficient for people to see what was going on around them. The first binoculars that were made were made out of wood and had no lenses. However, over time, the companies started making lenses out of plastic and glass so that they could better see what was happening right in front of them. Eventually, all the businesses within Greencastle came together and formed their own Binocular Company. This company is still in operation today and makes binoculars for both personal use as well as business applications.

In 1942, the town annexed the village of White Sands and renamed it Greencastle-White Sands. In 1968, the museum was moved from White Sands to its current location on Market Street in Greencastle.
Greencastle is a small town in Marshall County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Joliet–Naperville–Kankakee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Greencastle was George Hildebrandt in 1814. The town was founded on May 20, 1824 by three men: Nicholas Dutton, John Hammond and Augustus Goodrich. The first store opened in what is now the downtown area. A post office was established in 1829 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. Greencastle's economy has been based largely on agriculture since its founding. Today, the town's primary industry is tourism; its two main attractions are the Greencastle Battlefield National Monument and the White Sands Missile Range Complex. The first school located in Greencastle was one room with 10 students taught by Mr. Kapp and Mrs Douglass from 1828-30 while they were building a church on Main Street which became First Methodist Church later that year (the current building). In 1830-31 Dr Chauncey Bennet conducted a school for seven weeks during which time he also built a new house on Third Street which became home to Griggs School until it closed due to low enrollment around 1840 when Griggs Avenue was built as an addition to Uptown shopping district making this area more developed than what exists today (thankfully no Class AA demolition ever took place here!). In 1852-53 Alexander Ritchie conducted an academy from September 16th through October 4th where some of Indiana’s top talent such as John Clemens attended including winning $1,000 for his poem “To His Coy Mistress” written while he attend college at Purdue University; becoming America’s 1st Confederate General! After his graduation he moved back to Indianapolis but continued sending messages back home often stopping off at Greencastle on his way north before finally dying near Sylvania Macomb county line about 1850 after leading Confederate forces against Ulysses S Grant during the Battle of Shiloh! After losing its cotton crop due to Indian wars between1863-65 & 1865-68 flooding caused many families to move out west followingIndiana statehood especially those living around Lafayette/Cincinnati areas so by 1870 there were only 50 residents left living within city limits of what we know today!! One account claims 25% of all Grain grown here went into Butter or Cheese manufacturing!!! This did not stop however because people who could afford it bought land outside city limits east of US 11 !! So even though most folks left pretty much everything behind they still had access to quality food!!!! From 1870 until 1973 when law changed allowing white farmers within city limits again things started changing!!!!! People lost their farms too so prices went up 400%!!!!!!!! For every dollar you gotter payed inside city limits your neighbor gotter 300 dollars per acre outside!! But note that this did not happen overnight because people were trying different things like planting trees etc………………….still good food keeps coming out here tho!!!
