Greencastle is a city in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 26,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Butler County were French Iroquois traders and missionaries who set up a trading post near present-day Greencastle in 1795. Jesuit Father Antoine de La Salle built a small mission on the site in 1802 and named it Mission de la Madeleine after his motherMadeleine de Lorette. In 1841 Winespring founded what would become Greencastle as an agricultural settlement northeast of where he lived on Brush Creek Road between White Sands Road and Park Avenue (now Elm Street). By 1850 about 150 people lived hereabouts; some contributed land east of Brush Creek Road for agricultural purposes while others developed new homes elsewhere in town center or along Elm Street itself. A group of men led by John Swayne completed construction of First Baptist Church (later called Trinity African Methodist Episcopal Church) on Main Street southeast of town hall in November 1850; cornerstone placement took place on December 12 that same year following which services began January 3rd51st anniversary service was celebrated by Mayor J F G Norton on January 11th, 1870 In 1861 citizens voted to change their name from "Greencastle" to "Butler". In 1840, Jesse Halsey started an academy which became one of the most popular schools in Greencastle. The first railroad reached Greencastle on February 14, 1850 when it connected Lafayette and Greenwood with Indianapolis via Bloomington and Westville. The railroad provided economic opportunity for many people in both towns and helped spur development around it such as new housing developments and businesses that continues to this day including several shopping malls located within easy walking distance of each other as well as restaurants and nightlife options
