The Greencastle Ammunition Manufacturing Company was founded in 1851 by Andrew C. Smith and his brother-in-law, John G. Hilliard. The company produced ammunition for the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1865, the company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester and Blackhawk Ammunition Corporation. In 1898, the corporation became part of Brownells Armory Corporation. In 1915, Brownells merged with Remington Arms Company to become Remington Rand Corporation. In 1968, RemingtonRand spun off into its own company, Classic Arms Corp., which continued producing rifles and shotguns under theClassicArms name until 1978 when it was sold to Glock AG.
Greencastle is a small town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Greencastle was John Daugherty, who arrived in 1825. He built a log cabin on the north side of the river and named it Fort Daugherty. Over time, other settlers followed suit and various settlements were developed around Greencastle east of the river. In 1837, General David Logan founded what would become Evansville on land that he had purchased from John Daugherty. The town grew rapidly and by 1851, it had a population of 2,500 people. During World War II, Greencastle played an important role as one of the many industrial sites in Evansville where munitions were produced for the war effort. The community went through several tough years during the war due to production delays and high prices for munitions products caused by wartime shortages. However, after 1945 things began to improve as employment increased in local businesses and industry; however, there has been recent growth throughout this century thanks to new development along interstate 90 adjacent to town center which has led to more jobs for locals and better economic stability overall The current name given to Greencastle by its early settlers was "Crawford". It was chosen because multiple families resided near Crawfordsburg on Edwards Creek (now known as West Side Road). Crawford's heirs chose "Greencastle" because it cast no reflection on their earlier settlement or their affiliation with Crawfordsburg In 1798 James Caldwell settled down about two miles east of present day Greencastle on ground that now forms I-90 exit 5A (Merrill Road). This site became Caldwellsville after his death in 1802 . His heirs sold title deeds for land extending westward from present day Caldwellsville until they reached I-90 when they sold all but 6 acres back to Jennings County . In 1827 David Logan purchased 3/4 mile south of present day CaldwellsVILLE from Archibald Campbell On this parcel he erected a log cabin which he called Log Cabin #1 also known as “Logan’s Mill” This mill operated intermittently between 1840-1848 before being abandoned due to bad water pressure issues In 1881 Jesse Anderson established a store at what is now Market Street within sight of Log Cabin #1 while living nearby with his family For many years Post Office Box 32726 was just outside entrance doorof restaurant located at intersectionof Main & Market Streets
