In 1851, David Dodge established a blacksmith shop on South Main Street between West Third and East Fourth Streets which became one of the largest smiths in the area until it closed its doors around 1925. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Goshen were Frenchmen who established a fur trading post here in 1785. The post was abandoned after several years, but it served as the nucleus for what would become Kosciusko County. In 1814, General John Polkinghorne camped on thebank of the White River here and named his new place Goshen after his home country of England. When America became an independent country, General David Dixon decided to make Kosciusko County part of his newly formed territory. On December 15, 1818, he issued a proclamation calling for citizens of all ages to assemble at the courthouse square in Goshen under the guidance of Dr. James Hodge to commemorate the signing of independence from Great Britain. The day was very special because it marked almost two centuries since Kosciusko County had been part of Indiana! In 1827, land around Goshen was donated by Captain Levi Coffin to build a village onsite called New London (now Crawfordsville). At first only men could live there due to safety concerns surrounding Indian raids into nearby areas; however, this restriction soon passed when other pioneer families also moved into New London and began building their homes there too. By 1830, nearly every family in Goshen had built their own home and business within minutes of one another! Unfortunately this period also saw some major tragedies occur during these earliest days: While living in New London one night in 1830-31, local farmer William Stroud discovered nine bodies buried near his house – including six children! This tragedy convinced many residents that life should be lived cautiously and with caution; henceforth “New London” became known as “Goshentown” until its final removal fromthe community at high watermark during Hurricane Andrew in 1992 A Brief History Of Goshene
