Goshen, Indiana is a town in Butler County, Indiana, United States and the seat of Butler County. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Goshen is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original land where Goshen now stands was bought by David Mellon from Nicholas Carleton in 1824. In 1827, Genesee County was created from parts of Butler and Posey Counties. On October 1, 1828, Goshen became a town when it voted to become so by ordinance. The first post office in Goshen was established on December 1, 1830., and remained in operation until its closure on November 30, 1865. The village of Goshen merged with the neighboring towns of Freeport and Peru to form the new city of Peru in 1907. When that city dissolved in 1917 it merged with Butler again to create the current city of Indianapolis which continues to be named after David Mellon's grandfather (whose remains are interred at Beech Grove Cemetery). The first store in Goshen opened his doors on July 7, 1870 as "Fountain Store". A full-fledged grocery store followed two years later and continued through various mergers until 1984 when it became known as "Goshene Shopping Center". Today's shopping center includes three anchor stores: JCPenney®, Sears®, and Macy's®; along with numerous small businesses including several boutiques and specialty shops within walking distance for customers who would like more than what they could find at their local mall or department store outlets. Goshen, Indiana is a town in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,885 at the 2010 census. Goshen is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. The original post office called Goshen Township was established in 1824 and changed its name to Goshen in 1842; it became a city in 1907. The first permanent settler in Goshen Township was James Fenton who arrived on July 10, 1824. He and his family were the only ones to live there for over twenty years until Elijah Morse moved into the township on January 15th of 1830. Goshene had two schools which operated from 1827-1828: one for boys and one for girls. In 1840 when the Indiana General Assembly created Kosciusko County, Goshene became part of it as did other towns within that county such as Clinton and Dunkirk. However, due to Indian hostilities against white settlers beginning in 1839-1840 all east side villages within Kosciusko County were destroyed by Indian forces under Major Wayne Woods with exception of Goshene which he successfully defended while still being under protection of the Utes (Toquaht) tribe living west of Fort Dearborn although he lost most of his men including his father and brother during this time period. However following peace negotiations between American Indians and Ute Chief Black Hawk that ended on March 25th, 1840 all east side villages were spared any damage or destruction except for Goshene which remained unscathed during this time period known as “The Battlefields” dating back to that particular conflict involving the Utes vs Americans primarily conducted near present day Evansville with some estimates placing it anywhere from 17 miles north to south across Illinois river valley). It should be noted that following this particular conflict no individual or group ever regained control over eastern side Village areas again regardless of their current designation as “city” today even though these areas technically reside within our municipal boundaries today making them eligible for ad valorem property tax exemption currently enjoyed by many residents located within these boundaries despite not having an official municipal status! This fact alone speaks volumes about how important community engagement/cooperation can be within local government structures when faced with difficult challenges like those experienced by these eastern village communities during The Battlefields era! Aftermaths like this are why so much effort is put into ensuring open enrollment/participation by all members of a community before individuals or groupserennially attempt to doxx or disrupt such operations through various forms social media platforms!) Although closed enrollment existed prior to World War II it appears very few people actually attended school since there wasn’t really a need due to generally good agricultural production throughout those years especially given economic conditions at THAT time!)
