Goshen, Indiana is a town in Posey County,Indiana, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Goshen is located on the east bank of the White River. It is bordered to the north by Seymour and to the south by New Albany. The first settlers in Goshen were three families who came from Connecticut in 1787. They built a log cabin on the west side of White River where they now stand. In 1816, John Hays founded a grist mill here and it became one of the most important mills in Indiana until it closed down in 1922. In 1853, when Goshen was organized as a township, Daniel Boone was its first mayor and also its first clerk of court. He served for six years before he resigned to become justice of the peace for Posey County. The town’s name comes from George Washington Place which used to be near where present-day Main Street crosses White River. The original stoplight at that location still exists today and is used as an advertising store frontage on Main Street! The current courthouse was built around 1907-08 and dedicated by Judge Augustus Witherspoon Sargent Jr., one of Goshen’s few residents who attained high office during prohibition era (1917-1933). Goshen is located on the east side of the Hoosier River, about 20 miles north of Indianapolis. The first thing that attracted settlers to Goshen were its fertile land and strategic location on the river floodplain. By 1800, there were over 100 families living in Goshen. Some of these early settlers came from England, Ireland, and Scotland. In 1814, George Washington Goshen moved his family to Goshen from Yorktown Township, Pennsylvania after losing an election for a seat on the Indiana General Assembly. After moving to Goshen, George Washington became involved in local politics and helped create many of the town's most significant landmarks – such as the courthouse which still stands today (built in 1825), The Old Courthouse School (1828), and The Holyoke Baptist Church (1830). During World War II, Goshene served as an important center for munitions production due to its location on both sides of the Hoosier River. Today, much of what once produced munitions has been replaced by modern technology; however, some traces of old production remain including a paper mill that still produces high-quality paper products such as notebooks and textbooks

In 1851, Goshen became an incorporated town and continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1870 when it had a population of 1,500 people. However, Goshen's growth stopped soon afterwards and by 1880 it had only 100 residents left.
