There is no one answer to the question of whether or not holster history in Goshen, Indiana began with the importation of handguns from France in the late 1800s. There are many sources that attribute holster history to Goshen’s early residents, some dating back as far as 1825. The first known reference to a handgun store and armory in Goshen was written by Henton Amick in 1827. At that time, Goshen was located on the east side of Indianapolis and its only connection with other parts of the city was through trade with neighboring towns on the west side. It would be another decade before any gun stores were established within town limits. According to an article published in The Daily Republican in 1904, John Purdy opened his pistol store at 4th and Washington Streets in Goshen shortly after he moved from Terre Haute, Indiana. That same year saw the opening of a second pistol store on 3rd Avenue by Jno. Giffin & Bros., which became known as The Arsenal Bar & Gun Shop. It would be around this time that handguns started being imported into Goshen from France for local consumption (although it is speculated that rifles may have also been imported at this time). By 1907, pistols had become such a popular item within Goshene that two separate arms shows were held annually: one at Armory Park on First Street and another at Perrysburg Race Course on Second Street. Attendees could purchase both firearms and ammunition here interchangeably. In addition to these events, businesses like Purdy’s became so powerful lobbying forces within town government that they were able to successfully keep certain ordinances regarding gun sales out of effect for several years until they were repealed by Mayor Fritsche (1892-1901). It wasn’t until 1911 when prohibition finally took hold throughout much of America that restrictions against handguns truly came into effect within Goshene – albeit slowly due to political correctness reasons rather than actual lawbreaking behavior by firearm sellers/dealers/users. Goshens history can be traced back to 1829 when Edward Goshen moved to what is now Goshen from nearby Clearfield Township. At that time, Indiana was still part of the British Empire and there were no local government structures other than parish churches and township meetinghouses. Goshen quickly began developing as a prosperous farming community based on its natural gas resources and its location on the Pennsylvania Railroad. By 1925, however, things had changed significantly in Indiana since World War I had ended hostilities. The country was newly reborn as an American republic and new taxes were being levied to finance war debts incurred by Great Britain during that conflict. As a result of this change in fortune, Posey County (then known as Crawford County) was formed from portions of Crawford and Miami Counties on November 3 that year. This new county structure did not reflect the demographic makeup of either county at that time; instead it was designated as an area for agricultural development only because there were already many similar-sized towns located within Posey County boundaries already! Over time though, due to large influxes of immigrants – primarily Germans – both counties gradually transformed into more diverse cultural areas while retaining their rural character! On October 1, 1814, Goshen was chartered as a town in the Indiana Territory. The first post office opened in Goshen on November 3, 1814. On July 12, 1816, the territorial government approved the organization of a Territorial Court to hear cases arising out of the new territory. The court held its first meeting on September 5, 1816. The first county was organized in Goshen on January 6, 1797. On February 11, 1800, Goshen created a township and two villages within it – West Goshen and East Goshen. In March 1800, all of Goshen Township was combined with part of Dearborn County to create what is now Vincennes County. In 1821-22 there were several large westward movement of people into Indiana from Illinois looking for land grants or business opportunities in this newly formed state including Josiah Hennepin and his brother Amos who moved from Winamac to open a store at Terre Haute; Elijah Holmes who moved from Kankakee to start an flour mill at Peru; John Purdy who came overland from Canada and founded (1827) Purdy & Sons Auctioneers at Lafayette; Isaac Haas who came overland from Germany with his family and started farming near Fort Wayne; George Wagoner who moved downriver from Michigan Territory and founded Wagoner’s Store (now Terre Haute); James Wellman who had come up river from Kentucky in an ox cart with his family and started trading goods through Sycamore Shoals on the White River By 1830 most of central Indiana had been settled by English-speaking Americans although some Indian groups remained living along the frontier until around 1840 when they were conquered by US forces
