Goshen, Indiana is an unincorporated community in Harrison County, Indiana, United States. It was founded in 1836 by Nicholas Goshen and his wife Anna Maria. The post office at Goshen was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1944. In the early 1800s, Goshen was a small farming village located on the left bank of the White River. By 1860, however, it had grown to a town of about 100 residents near its current location on the east bank of the White River. The first white settlement in Goshen was made by Nicholas Goshen and his wife AnnaMaria in 1836 when they moved from their farmstead on the west side of the White River to a newlocation hereabouts. They named their new village after General John Potter's hometown of Gwynedd, Wales. The first Store opened here on October 15th of that year and business soon began to grow as people came to purchase goods needed for their farms or businesses located elsewhere around this area. By 1840, Goshen had become an important center for trade with neighboring towns along both banks of the White River. Merchants from these communities traded goods and services including lumber and other products exported downriver to Indianapolis; tannery products from Cincinnati; flour from Chicago; cheese from Michigan; eggs from Kentucky; potatoes from Illinois; etc. In addition to its role as a commercial center, Goshen also served as a place where farmers could bring their animals into town for sale or exchange (the first market within easy reach for local residents). This marketplace functioned as one important aspect of early Goshanians' social life and culture which still exists today! In 1847 Nicholas Gosheng built himself a residence near downtown which he called "The Star" after his favorite star constellation - something that many people likely remember because it remain standing today! A few years later he erected another structure - this time known as "The Gazebo" - which served as headquarters for local government for many years before being destroyed during World War II. Today only portions of these structures remain standing: The Gazebo's steeple remains visible atop itsuniquely designed granite foundation while much more importantly its two large chimneys have been preserved entire! During World War II most all original townspeople chose exile overseas rather than fight against allies who were attacking them directly or threatening their way of life – some did return eventually but others opted not to risk capture or execution by enemy forces if they could avoid it altogether!
