He named the village after General George Washington who had recently fought for France against England in America during the American Revolution. In 1824, General John Custer led his Seventh Cavalry through Goshen on their way to Battle Creek before crossing the state line into Michigan. That year also saw the founding of Goshen Academy which would become one of the leading high school systems in central Indiana. It wasn't until 1868 that railroad construction began through Harrison County and by 1870 Goshen had a post office and population of about 100 residents. By 1900 there were over 2,000 people living in Goshene
