Whitcomb donated land for a public school and for a separate white chapel which still stands today as Brown Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church. On November 16th, 1840, Whitcomb died at his home after years of hard work building this temple to Christianity and serving as its first pastor. For many years it served as both a place where people could come to worship and also as a meeting place for business leaders who would journey through Franklin on their way to or from Indianapolis or other points along the river circuit
Franklin, Indiana was founded on November 3, 1814 by James K. Polk and was named for General David Franklin who had led the American Revolution. The city was originally called Vincennes and was moved to its current location in 1828. In 1848, the state of Indiana granted Franklin a charter as a city and it became an important industrial center due to its production of potash and other minerals. In 1953, the city became home to Purdue University after being donated by John W. Lilly and his wife Irene Ayer Lilly.
