Franklin, Indiana is home to the first gun target in America. The target was built in 1814 by Major General James Wilkinson and Lt. Colonel George Washington Reynolds. It was located on the Franklin County Fairgrounds, now part of the IUPUI campus. TheGunTargets website reports that “The GunTargets program began as a way for college students and other interested individuals to have fun with firearms without having to worry about safety. Today, GunTargets remains an important part of American society, providing a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone who participates…..The history of these targets is a long one; they were designed as an educational tool for soldiery and civilians alike.” Gun Targets has been hosting events at their facility since 1978. In that time, they have hosted over 1 million guests including soldiers, law enforcement officers, educators, hunters, and others interested in learning about firearms and how to use them safely. Thisyear marks the 10th anniversary of GunTargets’ presence in Franklin County! As we celebrate this milestone I want to take a moment to discuss some of the reasons why this event is so significant. First off, GunTargets provides an incredible opportunity for people of all ages to learn about firearms – from children who are just starting out understanding how guns work to adults looking for ways to keep their family safe when out on vacation or camping. Secondly, Gun Target’s events offer leaders an opportunity for training exercises that can be used by law enforcement officers around the country……… Thirdly (and perhaps most importantly), Gun Targets events provide a unique opportunity for families to come together and enjoy some quality time together while enjoying firearm Instruction from top instructors from across North America!

On July 14th, 1858, Samuel Colt demonstrated his new revolver at a public exhibition in Hartford, Connecticut. The revolver was aypered to be efficient and reliable, and it quickly became the standard weapon of choice for law enforcement. In 1865, John Browning developed the first effective repeating rifle that could fire multiple rounds per minute. This invention made firearms more practical for hunting larger game than before. In 1898, two brothers named George and Jesse Smith built an 8mm automatic pistol that quickly became the standard sidearm for police and military forces around the world.
Franklin, Indiana was founded in 1814 by John C. Frémont and is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States. The city was named after George Washington, who made it his headquarters during the Battle of Bunker Hill. Franklin has a rich history that can be seen in its architecture, businesses, and residents. The City of Franklin was first settled by Europeans in the late 17th century. A trading post called Fort Wayne was established on the current site of Franklin in 1682. The fort served as a base for trade with Native Americans and Europe. In 1795, General Anthony Wayne built a small log cabin on what is now State Street near downtown Franklin to serve as an outposts for troops during the French and Indian War. In 1800, James Ketchum purchased land at what is now Elmira from Peter Beckwith for $1 per acre. Ketchum built a house on this land and renamed it Ketchum Hall after himself and his father-in-law, Daniel Boone (the founder of Boone County). In 1814, John C. Frémont discovered gold near what is now Indianapolis while exploring for new soils to mine in Michigan Territory. He decided to explore Indiana and found an abandoned town named Fort Wayne on March 24, 1814 (the day before he became US President). After exploring nearby towns including Vincennes (now Evansville) and Terre Haute (now Lafayette), Frémont decided upon Franklin as his temporary capital because it had good prospects for development due to its strategic location between Columbus and Detroit along Lake Erie and its population of about 100 people at the time it was founded. Although he initially thought only of developing the town into a commercial center with warehouses, factories, schools, churches and other infrastructure needed for manufacturing goods exported to Great Britain or France through Pittsburgh or New York City instead of being used solely as a military stopover station defense against British attacks on Indiana Territory during the War of 1812 – which would later become part of Canada – Frémont quickly realized that he could not do this without help from others within Ohio Territory who knew about gold deposits east of Kentucky’s border! On July 26thin1815 Congress passed legislation authorizing him to fill any void left by Jefferson’s death when he resigned as Secretary at war due to health concerns related to yellow fever pandemic sweeping America; however no one volunteered their services so Frémont immediately appointed James Callender Attorney General with power to create laws necessaryfor government function over Indians not under white control;Callender also became responsiblefor “constructing public works such as roadsand bridges….establishing jailsand prisons….building courts[etc.]” It wasn't until December 1st1816 when Congress finally authorized productionof cannons from lead mined east of Knoxville that gave Illinois Republic some hope they might win back their lost territory East Tennessee which had been ceded by Spain following their Mexican War victory over Mexico; but ultimately Mexico never completed constructionof their own campaign cannon line connecting Texas & California so East Tennessee reverted back under English control becoming part of Virginia again ceding nothing more than 400 square miles today knownas Cherokee Nation.– See map: http://www2eu1p9g4ds2l3xoz5nkrv5rq0iutuzfahyw3o8/files/Map%20of%20Indiana%20 contemporaneous%2015-2020%2015_large %40GoogleMaps
