Franklin is a small town in north-central Indiana. It is the county seat of Jefferson County and was founded in 1824. The population was 9,512 at the 2010 census. Franklin is also home to the University of Notre Dame. The city was named after Benjamin Franklin, one of America's most famous scientists and diplomats. The area that now makes up Franklin was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. In 1824, George Rogers Clark and his forces were invading Indian Territory when they came across a small village called "Franklin." Clark thought it would be a good place to winter before continuing his campaign, so he ordered his troops to stop there. As he looked around, he saw that the village had all been destroyed by fire. He decided that this site would make an excellent military fortification and named the fort "Franklin" after himself. Over time, many other people moved into Franklin from surrounding counties. One of these newcomers was John Marshall Whitehead who built the first log cabin in what is now Franklin on December 6, 1825. By 1830, white settlers had started moving into Franklin from all over Indiana and Ohio as well as from Kentucky and Tennessee across the Ohio River valley.. In 1834, General David Hunter attacked several Native American villages near what is now Frankfort on July 4th during an attempt to drive them out of their homes for violating US treaty boundaries with Canada.. A group of natives led by Chief Pontiac surrendered instead and were taken prisoner back to Canada where they were exchanged for British subjects later that year.. As more settlers arrived in Franklin, problems began to arise with regard to water availability and sanitation.Field crops such as corn could only be grown using irrigation systems provided by farmers living further away who paid for access through tolls or tariffs levied against them.. The townspeople began building their own water systems but this caused great inconvenience since it took up much space inside easy-to-repair stone walls which became known as "the Wall". To solve some of these issues, special teams set out into the surrounding countryside in search for underground sources of water – eventually finding one under a farmhouse leading directly to natural gas reserves under Lebanon Hill (now part of downtown). This discovery led to heavy construction work on new streets, buildings and infrastructure needed for supplying the new community with drinking water while also allowing residents access to natural gas services unavailable until much later

Franklin, Indiana is a town in central Franklin County,Indiana, United States. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. The name of the community comes from Benjamin Franklin who was born here in 1705. In 1827, the first post office in Franklin was established and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. The early settlers of this area were farmers and their families. They raised corn, beans, potatoes and other vegetables from local land which they cultivated with hand tools or horses pullers. With the arrival of railroads and travel to new markets during the nineteenth century, some farmers turned to manufacturing to support their families. One such family started a flour mill near downtown Franklin that still operates today as a commercial enterprise. By 1890, there were over twenty-five businesses operating in downtown Franklin including several banks and two grocery stores catering to the needs of both small towns and larger cities across the United States. During World War I there was an increase in traffic on Route 66 due to its potential for trade with Mexico City through Tijuana on both sides of the border; however no facilities existed for large scale military activity within town limits so most activities took place outside of town boundaries instead including Signal Hill Battlefield where American forces engaged Mexican soldiers on October 14-15 1918 . Founding of Franklin, Indiana In 1812, a group of fur traders and settlers founded the town of Franklin in central Indiana. The settlement grew quickly and soon had a population of around 100 people. In 1815, the first school was constructed in the town. By 1817, Franklin had become an important stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1824, the first courthouse was built in Franklin. The town continued to grow and by 1830, it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1830, Congress passed a bill recognizing Franklin as a county seat for Allen County. The population increased rapidly over the next few years and by 1835, it had reached 2,000 people. In 1840, President James Kinch appointed Asahel Baird as governor ofAllen County and Franklin became part of Baird's new state capital city - Indianapolis.
