However, it was not until 1824 that a rifle company was established by John Horseshoe and George Stephenson. This company produced rifles and pistols for export. In 1827, a shotgun company was also founded in Franklin by Samuel Colt and James Fenton. These companies produced shotguns as well as rifles and pistols for sale to the public. After 1859, when Indiana became an state, gun production shifted from Franklin to Indianapolis.

The Franklin community was founded in 1814 by George Washington Lewis and his wife Deborah. The first post office was established in 1815 and the first store, called "The Gable," opened in 1827. In 1839, John Hays moved to Franklin and began selling general merchandise from what is now the Hays Store on Main Street. By 1840, there were five stores and six homes in Franklin. In 1860, John Pemberton built a home on land that he had purchased from Abraham Lincoln for $2 per acre (the price then prevailing for outside land). Pemberton renamed his home "Pemberton House" after himself and became one of the most important citizens of Franklin during its early years. He also served as mayor from 1865 to 1870 and again from 1880 to 1886. In 1863, three young men named Robert Ewing (1823-1912), James Wills (1825-1901), and Jesse Reeves (1827-1900) came to Franklin with their families to start a new farmstead about two miles away from where they lived on Main Street south of State Road 27 near present day Ohio Road. They called their place "Ewingsville." The four boys grew up here and started farming together until they bought out Robert Ewing's shares in 1875; thereafter Ewingsville became Frankfort Farmstead Park & Village which continues today as one of Indianapolis' most popular tourist attractions with over 230 acres (100 hectares) devoted to agriculture including visitor center/greenhouses/golf course/zoo/. The first settler in what would become Franklin County was Nicholas Justus Colburn, who arrived in 1788. In 1810, Jonathan Jennings founded a small town named Jenningsville on Indian Creek near present-day Uniontown before moving to Franklin in 1815 andestablishing a tavern there called The Lion's Den which still stands today as one of the city's most popular tourist attractions. The city was named after Benjamin Franklin, who had been born there in1771 and died there in 1784. As early as 1803, citizens were petitioning for an incorporation charter from the state government because they felt that their county should be moved from Hendricks County to create more space for themselves within Indiana's borders. On February 14, 1808, voters approved incorporation by a vote of 50-0; and on March 1st1808the City of Franklinsburgh was established with just four homes left unincorporated according to historian George Murchison Jr.: "It [Franklin] owed its inception chiefly to John Pemberton - one of those enterprising young men who had made such strides since he first came overland into this country some thirty years earlier...Pemberton saw an opportunity to get himself something like an own parish...he set about organizing our little settlement." In spite of many challenges faced by early inhabitants (chief among them being lack of transportation), including floods during prohibition times that destroyed homes and businesses along Indian creek, by 1830Franklin had nearly doubled its population; it now numbered 678 souls "of all ages", with 640 males and 160 females living together "in proper families". At that time much progress had been made both legislativelyand practically withinthis nascent republic: But despite these successesomething soon went wrong: political corruption became rampant; graft from merchants led to economic stagnation; taxes were raised too high without corresponding reductions elsewhere while manufacturingdeclined precipitously; social unrest grew increasingly violent as competition for jobs turned into open warfare between employers and workers.; finallybanal differences among classes culminated in class conflictthat ultimately ledto mass mob violence throughout this era typified by Henderson v Randolph (1835). But despite these Andalusian difficulties,- primarily due doubtless to Pemberton’s energy & drive -Franklin quickly proved itself as a center for learning & trade ;& soon became home

Polk signed General Order No. 11 which ordered all Native American nations east of the Mississippi River to cede their land to white settlers or be destroyed outright. As a result, Franklin became one of several cities within Indian Territory that were forced to sell their land or be abandoned by their people; however, it remained an important commercial center for many years due to its location near two major rivers and its natural resources such as timber and coal."
