In 1814, a group of men from Franklin traveled to Indiana to purchase land. The group was led by Captain Nicholas Forman and his brother Samuel Forman. The brothers were the first white men to live in what is now Franklin. In 1816, they married Lucy Payne and founded the Payne family business as a mercantile firm. They also became interested in farming and started a small farm around 1818. In 1830, they bought an additional 2,000 acres of land in what is now Monroe County and built their home there. In 1840, Captains Nicholas Forman and Samuel Forman sold their interest in the company to their son John Forman Jr., who continued running it until 1865 when it merged with another business he had founded called the Wells Fargo Bank. In 1847, Captains Nicholas Forman and Samuel Forman purchased an additional 8,000 acres of land east of Monroe County for $30 per acre which they named "Franklin Township". They began developing this new land into a town which would be known today as Franklin. TheFormans donated many of the buildings that still stand in Franklin today such as the post office building and bank building which are all on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1850, Captains Nicholas Forman passed away at the age of 86 years old and his son John took over management of the company. John formed partnerships with other businessmen throughout Franklins history to continue expanding production on their properties including buying out other businesses in order to keep control over their lands while maintaining a high level of production. Today, most people know about Captain Nicholas's House & Gardens which is located within Franklins limits on State Road 551 just south of Interstate 474

Franklin is a city in, and the county seat of, Butler County, Indiana. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,898. The Franklin area has been inhabited by people for at least 10,000 years. In 1795, French explorer Jean-Baptiste de La Salle visited what is now Franklin and named it after Benjamin Franklin who had recently become the Vice President of England. The first permanent white settlement in the area was established in 1814 when James K. Polk built a cabin on East Canadian Creek near present-day Carbondale. By 1830, about 100 settlers lived in what is now Franklin. In 1826, Ohioan General Hugh Crayton decided to move his army from Vandalia to Butler County to help put down a Native American uprising there known as the Black Hawk War. Heading his force through Franklin and other towns in Butler County on their way to Vandalia were several men who would later become famous for their roles during that conflict – including John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson – as well as future president George Washington Carver and Jesse James’s brother Franklins siblings: Sylvester and Lucy Carver. The town's name was changed from Carbondale to Franklin on July 1, 1827 due to an influx of people seeking land grants near Chicago under the Indiana Territory Sales Act of 1825 (known today as 5th Amendment rights). The original site of present-day Carbondale had been chosen because it lay across "the road" from then-Vandalia (then called Terre Haute), which quickly became one of Indiana's largest cities and its commercial center for growing wheat crops while also hosting cultural events such as cricket matches between local teams and British visitors or America's First Olympiad Held at Indianapolis over three days in November 1828 (the first time an international event had been held in America). The area around present day Carbondale became known as "Franklin Township." In 1840–1841 settlers began moving into what is now east central Marion County; these included David Wiethornorth who built a gristmill on West Canadian Creek soon after arrival. In addition to grain milling activity some farmers started raising cattle nearby; these operations continued until about 1860 when all but one farmstead closed up due mostly to lack of available pastureland for animals given rapidly increasing populations density along with increased competition from betteririsers throughout much of easternIndiana during this period especially west central Marion County where larger tracts were being offered more frequently both by speculators based out of Cincinnati Ohio looking for new markets within Indiana Territory overall although not always resulting in timely construction permit approvals thereby causing great farmer disappointment often leading them Negroes laboring side by side with whites sharecropping etc.; many residents turned against cotton production seen it becoming increasingly important industrialized southeasternIndiana economy development faster than they could afford/properly provide thus creating long daily commuting distances treadmill work/life styles lifestyle changes without any benefits social services infrastructure
