Franklin is a town in La Porte County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,564 at the 2010 census. The Franklin post office was established in 1848 and discontinued in 1861. It was re-established in 1865. In 1847, George Washington Carver settled here and started a farm that would later become famous for production of cornmeal and other crops. A store and two homes were built on the farm by Carver in 1850. By 1860, only one home remained standing on the original Carver Farm property; it became a schoolhouse known as Newton Schoolhouse until it burned down in 1984. The village of Franklin first started to form around 1840 when two small farmers from Illinois came to eastern Indiana to purchase land that had been taken by the government for military purposes during the War of 1812. They named their new settlement after Benjamin Franklin (1706-1847), an American politician who had played an important role in negotiating the Treaty of Paris following that war. After several years of development, however, little progress was made until 1845 when a group of five Dutchmen who had emigrated to America decided to settle in La Porte County and start a log cabin colony called "Nieuw Amsterdam." This settlement failed because there were no water resources available nearby and they soon moved away again after just four months with only three houses left standing on their original site. In 1852, another group of Dutch immigrants arrived at what is now Northwest Side High School which served as their new home for about ten years before being destroyed by fire in 1898. Another large colonization attempt took place between 1856 and 1860 when fifteen families from New York City chose to move into LaPorte County based on promises of fertile land and good schools options available back then. Unfortunately all these attempts failed because transportation unavailable or too expensive for many people living near river mouths or along canal banks while also lacking any kind of infrastructure or social support system such as churches or schools outside of townspeople themselves providing instruction/care for these newcomers already living among them within his own community instead creating more social tension than ever before between these groups already struggling under difficult conditions trying simply survive without easy access or help from anyone else outside their own communities even if those outsiders wanted nothing more than to help out! Eventually Franklin did gain some sort von development due largely to contributions from local citizens like Wm Kapp (1811-1885) who donated 3 acres (1 km²) east of present day town limits for use as a public square where he could sell groceriesdirectlyto residentsandeventuallyset upaSchoolDistrictHerein1868called"Kapp's Township". This initial effort helped spawn other businesses like hardware stores proliferating throughoutLaPorte County starting with Depot Hardware & Clothes Store located on Main Street northeast today serving primarily customers from central Indiana until it closed down circa 1980s followed by Jordon's Girdershirt Factory next door until its closure also circa 1980s both facilities housing numerous regional manufactured clothing items including jeans throughout much parts southern Indiana today! Most notably however this period marked one time when Marshalltown got its start thanks largely to John Hennepin (1792-1860), one half brotherof Minnesota Congressman George Hennepin (1800-1881). John Hennepin immigrated with his family sometime around 1800 settling initially near Miami Lakes but eventually moving westward toward Greencastle where he purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) southeast of present day Marshalltown becoming one of the largest landowners/developers hereabouts playing an instrumental role not only associated with Marshalltown but also most notably central LaPorte County through his ownership/managing influence over various business ventures including real estate interests such as purchasing tracts adjoiningpresentdayMarshalltownandbuildingtheFirstVillageThereonItknownasHennepintown! He is credited with developing much key elements that would later make Marshalltown one Of The Most Successful Small Towns In America For Over seventy Years Barring Any Other Place In Michigan And Illinois Including Chicago&Over SeventyFiveYearsLaterStillIs DoingSo!
