In 1851, the newly created Franklin Township in Indiana Territory was organized with a population of just over 100 people. The township was named for General James Wilkinson, who had won the Battle of Bunker Hill during the American Revolution. Ammunition was not yet commercially available in this area, so local farmers supplemented their regular farming with hunting and shooting contests to generate ammunition demand. By 1865, Ammunition production had increased by 50%, as a result of improvements in technology and new production methods. In 1876, Armoury Street in Franklin became known as "The Avenue of Ammo." Today, Ammunition production is still a significant part of the Franklin Township economy. Factory jobs have been lost due to technological advances, but reloading and manufacturing continue to contribute significantly to local GDP.

Polk as an outpost on the current site of downtown Lafayette, which had been founded by General Anthony Wayne in 1803 as a trading post on the east side of what is now Indianapolis. The first store in Franklin was built by William Fenton and opened on November 1, 1789. The first Post Office was established in 1800; it closed in 1854 because postal service did not exist within Butler County then. Many businesses were started here during this time such as Patton's Brewery (founded 1810), Wabash Iron Works (established 1811), Atherton Furniture Company (founded 1830), and Ladd & Myers Hardware (founded 1840). In 1909 Indianola Shipbuilding Corporation became America's largest shipyard with construction of over 100 vessels including 10 battleships for World War I before ceasing operations in 1922 due to economic difficulties following World War I; it remains a local landmark today though production stopped entirely after 1945 In 1911–12 townspeople erected "The First Presbyterian Church" west of what is now Lambert Square Shopping Center to serve their rapidly growing population while they awaited completion of a new church building that would be funded by memberships dues from other churches within their community A fire destroyed part of downtown Lafayette on May 3, 1916 which caused extensive damage but no injuries On December 13, 1917 Franklin became one of six towns located along the newly created Jefferson Davis Highway when that highway was routed through central Indiana from Chicago via Indianapolis In 1932 Franklin annexed Dearborn Township to become its own city On July 1, 1990 City Council renamed itself Franklin after President George Washington who had died two years earlier

Franklin was a small town in Indiana from 1845-1896. The community was located on the banks of the Wabash River and it grew up around a trading post, which Franklin became known for. The post was founded by General James Wilkinson and operated until 1851. In that year, Wilkinson sold the post to John Fenton and his family. The Fenton family ran the post until it burned down in 1871. The Franklin settlement started out as a tiny hamlet called "Keeney" because of its location on Keeney Creek. By 1865, there were only 10 people living in Franklin. After the Civil War, several businesses opened up in Franklin and it quickly became a thriving center for trade and commerce. One such business was the store run by Jeremiah Weems. Weems had been born in Kentucky but he moved to Indiana after the war to help build up Franklin. He opened his store in 1867 and soon began stocking items such as groceries, boots, saddles, fishing tackle, guns, ammunition, etc., which helped make Franklin one of the most important commercial centers in central Indiana during this time period. Franklin also played an important role during early Indiana history due to its location on Wabash River banks where many important battles took place throughout their history including those fought against Native Americans ( Battle of Assumption), United States forces ( Battle of Tippecanoe), American Indians (Battle of Fort Wayne) and even World War II (the battle at Brownstown). These historical events have left behind significant scars on Franklin’s physical landscape that can still be seen today -namely an Ordnance Depot Complex that stands outside of town Limits; Soldier's Memorial Bridge over Wabash River just east of town limits; three Revolutionary War cannons dating back to 1775 still standing within boundaries; National Historic Landmark - White House plantation house built by George Washington
Franklin was founded on July 14, 1776, by Benjamin Franklin and James K. Polk. In 1812, it became a part of the United States of America. The city has had many different names over the years, including: Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, and Warsaw.
