However,due to its location on the Great Lakes region and its status as a major transportation hub, Frankfort slowly regained some manufacturing activity during the late 20th century and today has a strong economy based primarily on agriculture

Frankfort is a town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. Frankfort was founded in 1814 by General David Wilkinson and named for French general François-René de La Fayette. The first post office was established in 1816. In 1824, the county seat of Hancock County moved from Frankfort to Terre Haute. In 1828, the state capital of Indiana moved from Indianapolis to Frankfort, then to Terre Haute after becoming an independent state. The City of Frankfort lost its charter status in 1932 and has been administratively part of Hancock County since then. The Village of Frankfort was incorporated as a village on December 11, 1912. It was suffocated by white flight during World War I when almost all black residents left the town due to economic insecurity following America's entry into the war on April 6, 1917. White flight accelerated after World War I because there were few jobs available for war veterans and their families; however, many black villagers returned to town once Reconstruction began in 1919 as opportunities improved across America following the end of World War I
Frankfort is a city in and the county seat of Frankfort County, Indiana, United States. The population was 7,936 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1814 by fur traders on the Scioto River. The first permanent settler in what is now Frankfort was John Stephenson. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Scioto River in 1814. In 1815, he married Sarah Goodnight and named their new settlement after her sister-in-law Martha Wayne. The town's first school was built that year by students of local Presbyterian Reverend James Stevenson. The first post office in Frankfort was established in 1816; it was called "New Carlisle." In 1817, Aiken Township (now Franklin Township)was organized from parts of Harper and Stephenson townships. By 1840, most of what is todayFrankfort had been developed as part of Harper Township. In 1844, land grants were given to former slaveholders Isaac McCoy and John Brown for the purpose of erecting schools for freed slaves in what are now Harper and Franklintownships respectively. The cornerstone for the Illinois School for Negroes (later African American Technical Institute) was laid by President James Kahl during his visit to Harper Township on October 15, 1944. That same year saw also groundbreaking for First Baptist Church which would later merge with First Methodist to form one large church complex known as White Memorial United Methodist Church today – all within walking distance of each other! “It is but fair to say that this [the] beautiful old white building," said Revd Hosea Swayne when describing the soon-to-be completed African American Technical Institute campus north of downtown Frankfort "was started principally with money brought over from Illinois by Drs McCoy and Brown years ago."
