It is a medium-sized city with a rich history dating back to its founding in 1814. Frankfort played an important role during the American Revolution as a center of trade and culture. The city also experienced significant growth following World War II, becoming one of the most populous in Indiana. Today, Frankfort remains an energetic community with significant cultural and economic interests. The founder of Frankfort was James Waddell Sr., who arrived in 1814 from Kentucky with his family after serving in the U.S. Army under General Anthony Wayne during the war against British forces. After arriving in what is now Hardin County, Waddell developed land that he named for himself - James Waddell Township (now part of downtown Frankfort). In 1816, Waddell erected a log cabin on his lands which served as their first courthouse and jail until replaced by present-day courthouse block No. 1 on Main Street in 1793 following passage of the general assembly's act providing for such construction within "the limits" of Hardin County free from state taxation only if it were dedicated to public use - an act which was later ratified by proclamation by President George Washington on November 10th, 1792.. In 1800, John Smith founded Illinois Central Railroad Company near where today's Union Station stands; this railroad would later become known as Amtrak rail service connecting Chicago with many other points east across America. At this time much commerce took place overland rather than via wagon train traveling through states like Ohio or Kentucky then journeying through Pennsylvania or Virginia before reaching Philadelphia or Baltimore – all within easy reach for traders and travelers along Route 66 (then called "the Great Road"). In 1814 James Waddell Sr., father of Mayor James Waddell Jr., purchased 500 acres south of town from Simon Prine for $1 per acre – making him one of Indianapolis' earliest property owners/holders! James Waddell Jr.'s wife Mary Ann (née Hanks) had married David Denton sometime prior to her husband's arrival to help support their growing family when he became colonel commanding troops stationed at Fort Dearborn during the War Between The States (1812-1815). They soon divorced after giving birth to young children but continued living together secretly until their deaths six years apart – one due complications following childbirth while another succumbed to yellow fever while living cooperationally with her Indian husband Resolute Sioux at agency located near present day Warsaw Twp./Winfield Twp./New Mexico City – both natives & residents long ago departed these parts! A few weeks after becoming mayoralty-elect JWJ donated land extending northwest from Main Street eastward forming corner lot No 7 on lot No 12 opposite current location OF THE STATE GOVERNMENT BUILDING NOW LOCATED ON HIGHWAY 65 BETWEEN RANDOLPH AND FRANKFORT TOWNSHIP…this donation being made under protest given then opposition mounted AGAINST erection OF ANY NEW BUSINESSES OR LODGINGS BY THE CITY IN THAT AREA AFTER MUCH PRESSURES FROM FREE LIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL ORGANIZERS RESPECTIVELY!
