In 1919, Frankfort's first optical store opened its doors. It was called the Optical Shop of the American Legion and sold instruments for sightseeing, photography, and other amateur endeavors. The shop was located on Second Street in what is now the city's downtown area. In 1927, the store moved to Seventh Avenue and became one of the most well-known in town. In 1941, it merged with another optical store to form The Optical Company of America. At that time, it was one of the largest retail organizations in Indianapolis. In 1957, The Optical Company merged with two other stores to form The Sporting Goods Pyramid and continued selling optics until its closure in 1984. Frankfort, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of Franklin County, Indiana, United States. The population was 21,871 at the 2010 census. This significant structure helped spur continued growth in Frankfort and led to its nickname "the most beautiful city in America." However, despite this progressivism (and occasional controversies), Franksfort also experienced some seminal moments during its history such as when local leaders successfully lobbied Congress to adopt Indianapolis as their new state capital in 1896; or when women were finally admitted to full voting rights in 1975 following a referendum campaign spearheaded by then Mayor Edwin Ewing; or when Prohibition ended two years later.
