Frankfort, Indiana is a small town located in Union County,Indiana. The population was 624 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Frankfort was platted in 1836 by General John Potter and named after his mentor, Frederick Douglass. The first settler in this area was Isaac Dunham who moved from Canada to what is now Frankfort in 1837. In 1840, James Henshaw bought land here and built the first mill on the current site of Frankfort High School in 1841. By 1850, there were over 20 businesses operating in this small town with a population of just under 100 people. In 1861, when Confederate General Robert Ewing invaded Union County to try to start a new slave state called "The Confederacy," residents of Frankfort fought for the South against their own government. Some residents even took up arms and joined Confederate forces while others neutrality was demanded due to concerns over possible retribution if they sided with their northern friends. Despite this defiance, many citizens lost their lives during The Civil War including local resident Abraham Lincoln who was shot three times while trying to escape from slavery into freedom on April 14th 1865 near Frankfort Junction Railroad Station
