The first European to visit what is now Frankfort was French Jesuit Father François de Lacrosse on July 24, 1688. He named it "Lacrosse" after his own landor parish in France. It wasn't until 1824 that the town site was formally laid out by Colonel John Fenton and Surveyor General George Stephenson when they surveyed portions of present-day Porter County for the Indiana Territory. In 1827, pioneer Alexander McMaster founded Frankfort Academy which became one of America's leading higher education institutions. In 1854, the steamboat "Cleveland" ran into difficulties while traveling downriver from Vincennes to Indianapolis and burst into flames just upstream from where Frankfort currently stands; this event forever changed downtown Frankfort as both riverfront businesses and residences were destroyed or damaged in the fire which also destroyed much of nearby Lafayette Township (now Noblesville). Today's downtown area began to take shape in earnest during the late 19th century when many frame buildings were erected along Main Street between State Street and Meridian Avenue including two monumental additions: First National Bank Building (now known as Bankers Life) on Main Street west of State Street and second National Bank Building (now known as PeoplesBank) on Meridian Avenue east of State Street. In 1911, statehood was granted to Indiana by President James K. Polk Jr., who noted that "[Indiana] should be admitted not only because its people are worthy but because it offers a model for other states." The following year saw major growth with construction of what is now called Fountain Square – then an unkempt open field – as well as brick homes near Military Road/State Road 705 north of Interstate 65 east of I-65 providing earlyresidential housing for many families living inFrankfort during this time period. A number of these brick homes remain extant today within walking distance or driving distance from most business districts located throughout downtownFrankfurt

Frankfort is a small town in Marshall County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Wayne metropolitan area. The first settlement in Frankfort was made on the banks of the River Kankakee by Methodist missionaries in 1836. A post office was established here in 1843 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1854, a railroad station was built here and served as the center of trade and transportation for the community. Frankfort grew rapidly during this time and by 1860 had reached its current size. By 1870, there were over 100 residents living in Frankfort. In 1911, a new courthouse was constructed at what is now downtown Frankfort and soon became one of the most popular tourist destinations in rural Indiana. The courthouse complex also included a library which opened its doors to public use on May 15, 1912. In 1923, construction began on another large courthouse which would serve as both Frankfort's official government center and court house until it closed its doors in 1993. The history of downtownFrankortx from 1911-1993 can be summed up with just three items: The original courthouse (1911), construction of the larger (later) Courthouse Annex ( 1923), and finally closure of that building due to lack of funding after years of neglect by city leaders
